Pederson really seems to be putting some effort into improving the atmosphere around Pitt f-ball since he has come back. The Spring game was really good, and the Athletic Department made it a great Saturday afternoon.

One thing about Pederson, he understands Pitt athletics.

And oh buy the way, sorry Chas, but the Shave the Stach is... L A M E
I do not want to make a joke out of our coach before, after, and certainly not during the game.

I would recommend to have Pederson, members from the Athletic dept. and a contingent of students take a road trip (on a Pitt bye wk) down here to a SEC game for a little benchmarking exercise. Sure you can argue that they don't have good pro sports teams, or they have to take at least one day a week off from hunting. However, the SEC has the best atmosphere hands down.
Winning is a given...
Everyone complains about the off campus stadium. Give the students better parking up front. Hire local bands to play in the students parking lot. Have old timers (ie. Dorsett) come back and take the mic for an impromptu pep rally. Make everyone say, "i wonder who will be on stage this week". "I heard a rumor that Marino was going to be in town." Bring the recruits to these tailgates and let the students chant their names (ala Shady, Shady Shady).
I am glad to hear that Pederson and DW are attempting to listen to the students. I have always said that he should get a bunch of the Oakland Zoo'ers together with a couple cases of beer in the Union and lock the doors. Leave them in there until they have a full set of ideas.

#1 Win
#2 Allow people who actually go to the games, park in the lots next to the stadium for tailgating. These lots are always half full.
#3 Win
#4 Shady for Heisman Bobblehead sponsored by UPMC
#5 Win
#6 Free towels handed out at every gate by various sponsors
#7 Win
#8 Chants to get fans involved (i.e. WVU shakes their keys after every first down). We need something that gets the fans involved other than the cheers during timeouts.
#9 Win

We have beat this issue to death in the past, but since we are on the topic of the Game Day Experience again...Yes winning will put fans in the seats, but we still need to do more to make the game an "experience". There are only six or seven home games a year and each one has to be made special. I did respond to Mr. P's letter and basically told him he needs to "hype" the games and the program more in the media. For example, instead of having a one hour pregame show, have a two hour pregame show...Run TV ads, put a 25 ft tall Shady on the side of a building with the caption "Got Shady?" Also, as others have stated, use that giant jumbotron for something more than ketchup bottles! Use it prompt the fans for crowd cheers (rather than exclusively using the cheerleaders holding cardboard signs!). Bring back the P-I-T-T LETS GO PITT cheer at strategic times during the game, and use the jumbotron to spark the crowd to do it. Play more upbeat music during a stoppage of play and as someone has said, pick a song to bring the team on the field and stick with it.

I am sorry to hear that Dennis will no longer be posting here. The news that he is a still in High School is amazing. He did a nice job covering basketball and he will be missed.

We've discussed this all at length a few months back. And we all agree winning is the most important factor. Just look at 2003 as an example. But there are things the admin can do to make it a better gameday experience, one you want to go back to. Cheaper ticket prices certainly would help, the Panther Pitt or other organization coordinating student cheers and shirts. As much as I hate the State Penners, its pretty impressive when you see 100k white shirts.

Also, as discussed before ease up on the tailgating restrictions and stop hiding the students under a dilapidated bridge - they are the heart of the university. Its time we give our team a true home field advantage.
