Jeff Otah to Carolina

The Carolina Panthers gambled by not taking Otah at the #13 spot. Instead reaching (in my opinion) for Jonathan Stewart of Oregon at Running Back. They then traded with Philly to move in to the #19 spot to grab Jeff Otah.

Otah was expected to go in the #12-20 range. He slid a touch further than expected. I really expected the Bears to grab him at #14 when he was there.

Congrats to Otah.

Flacco goes 18th to Baltimore. Guess that transfer to D-IAA (or whatever it’s called now) Delaware was the right move. Congrats to him as well!

Where is Morelli projected to be drafted?

Comment by Brian of Brooklyn 04.26.08 @ 8:43 pm

No Dave, it was Wanny ball!

He couldn’t play at Pitt but it looks like he will get a shot in the pros!!!

Just think if Pitt had a real QB in 2007, they would have went 9-3 and went to a bowl game!!

Comment by Wanny Ball 04.26.08 @ 9:15 pm

Brian

I’m sure Dave is going to offer Anthony a job as QB coach!

Comment by Matt 04.26.08 @ 9:16 pm

It is kind of funny that Carolina traded with Philly to get Otah since earlier in the week Philly said they were going to try to trade up (possibly with Carolina) to make sure they got Otah.

Comment by The Prowler 04.26.08 @ 9:23 pm

Wanny ball also landed the guy who was picked right after Flacco. Guess going to Pitt worked out for him to. What was Wannstache supposed to do, bench Palko? That wasn’t going to happen regardless of the coach. Wanny ball has had two players drafted in the first round in consecutive years. He is doing just fine.

Comment by omar 04.26.08 @ 9:30 pm

Ummm… am I the only one that thinks the dropoff in competition from 1A to 1AA aided the “rise of Joe Flacco”?

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 04.26.08 @ 10:44 pm

No PSucks players in the first two rounds. Connor slid like he was going into second base.

AND FOR THE LAST TIME, WE COULDN’T KEEP FLACCO AND PALKO! If Flacco didn’t get to start, he was going to transfer, it would have been nice to keep him, but would couldn’t and not lost Palko. I hope he has a nice career.

Comment by Crackbaldo 04.26.08 @ 11:43 pm

Word around Chicago was that Otah was going to be “Wanny’s Revenge” for the Bears; hence they went a different route.

Comment by Jason 04.27.08 @ 12:40 am

I’m so tired of the moron revisionists and the “great flacco” – NO ONE THREW HIM OFF THE TEAM FOR FUCKS SAKE. He quit and went to play at Delaware. There was nothing we could do – are we supposed to bench every starter when the backup says they’re going to quit? But, oh, that’s right, he must have been the better QB because he got drafted higher. Cause everyone always gets that right – the top picks turn out to be the best QBs and the QBs picked lower ALWAYS turn out to be the awful QBs. Just ask Couch and Brady.

And seeing “morelli” and “drafted” in the same sentence made me laugh my ass off. I needed a good laugh today…

Not a single State Penn or WVU player drafted in the first two rounds…i can’t believe it…especially when they both tell us how great their programs are…unbelievable…

Comment by Stuart 04.27.08 @ 4:55 am

Anyone who thinks choosing Palko to start over Flacco was a big mistake based on yesterday’s NFL draft result clearly does not understand the reality of the sitution at Pitt when that decision was made and Flacco subsequently transfered. Palko had to run for his life due to woefully inadequate pass protection all that season. A classic pocket passer like Joe Flacco would have been eaten alive. To have started Flacco, who was also very inexperinced at the time, over the more experienced and more mobile Palko would have been a complete disaster and an incompetent coaching decision. Despite his ultimate pro-potential due to his height and strong arm, Joe Flacco simply wasn’t a viable choice for Pitt to start back when Palko was the other choice. Now, last year we surely could have used that older, more experienced, Joe Flacco. Had he been around as a senior with Bill Stull as his backup Pitt might have gotten 3-4 more wins, a nice bowl game, and the inexperinced Smith and Bostick would not have needed to see the field so prematurely.

Back to the original thread, which is congratulating our most current Panthers, congrats to Mike McGlynn as well.

Much success to him and the rest of the boys today.

Comment by johnny 04.27.08 @ 1:08 pm

Stuart, glad I could get your day started off right.

I’ve noticed a lot of Wannstedt-bashing on boards for NFL teams (dammit, that’s our job!). They’re calling him a poor evaluator of talent and the like for starting Palko and not giving Flacco a chance to win the job.

Just for fun I tried Googling:

second quarterback five touchdown passes against notre dame

…and guess what, Joe Flacco’s name didn’t come up. I wonder who these NFL guys would have started in 2005 if they had to make the call.

Comment by Brian of Brooklyn 04.27.08 @ 2:45 pm

What did tyler palko do wrong? If i remember right he had a pretty good college career? Palko had an offensive line that was non existent while he was at pitt…. You have to be joking if you think by starting flacco pitt would have been any better. Tyler palko was a very good college quarterback

Comment by Adam 04.27.08 @ 3:32 pm

Mike McGlynn drafted by my hometown Eagles, awesome. I hope he has a really solid career for us, Andy Reid loves those linemen who can play all over the O-line, he should definitely stick with the team.

Comment by merlin 04.27.08 @ 3:52 pm

Palko did absolutely NOTHING wrong as a QB and only the arm chair revisionists will say different. They do not understand the realities of the situation. Unfortunately it seems too large of a section of our fan base is made up of these morons that you have to constantly correct and make look like fools.

Maybe Michigan should have started Brady all 4 years so they could have 4 back to back national championships. Its all sooooo easy to see now…

I can’t believe Slaton got picked at the end of the third round! Although i’m glad that everyone sees how awful that WR from WVU is.

Morelli still waiting by phone… And if that moron can graduate from State Penn it shows how worthless that degree really is…

love that mcglynn is an eagle..E-A-G-L-E-S..EAGLES!

Hey, my Bills picked up Cox with the 2nd-to-last pick. Cool!

Comment by Brian of Brooklyn 04.27.08 @ 7:20 pm

congrats to Otah, McGlynn and Cox and thanks for your hard work at PITT. Several more may end up signing as free agents. PITT can be proud of its players this weekend.

Comment by IronmanEE68 04.27.08 @ 11:28 pm

Amazing how we had a terrible offensive line and yet had 2 players from that line drafted.

Comment by Joey D 04.28.08 @ 9:44 am

Stuart,

Must you always throw personal insults!

Did you ever play competitive sports?

Comment by Greg Morelli 04.28.08 @ 11:10 am

Joey–don’t forget you play 5 OL at a time and OL is one area of a team where both quality and experienced depth are of utmost importance. Two NFL drafted tackles do not necessarily equate to having the overall quality, experience and depth required at all 5 spots for a top notch OL. Add to that the fact that commentators on the draft indicated that Otah was drafted mostly on his potential due to his measurables (noting that he still has a lot to learn having started playing FB later than most kids) than on his current level of skill. McGlynn, who was taken further down in the draft, is seen as a better candidate for guard and liked for his potential versatility to play different OL positions (meaning he is seen as a bcakup in the NFL?).

Comment by pitt1972 04.28.08 @ 11:23 am

I think we found a Morelli that can read!

Comment by ChrisA 04.28.08 @ 11:25 am

Then there is this analysis of the Ravens draft from Yahoo Sports (does any of the analysis of Flacco sound familiar?):

Baltimore Ravens
Picks: QB Joe Flacco, RB Ray Rice, LB Tavares Gooden, S Tom Zbikowski, G Oniel Cousins, WR Marcus Smith, OT David Hale, S Haruki Nakamura, WR Justin Harper, RB Allen Patrick

Positives: Rice, Gooden and Zbikowski

Negatives: Flacco

Bottom line: C. There’s a lot of excitement about Flacco, who has a cannon arm. But look at the history of the league: QBs who are taller than 6-5 generally aren’t very good. They can’t move fast enough to avoid hits. Flacco lumbers when he moves and he’s making a big jump from Delaware. Good luck. Rice is a very good backup to Willis McGahee, and Gooden is a much better player than he showed at Miami.

Comment by HbgFrank 04.28.08 @ 12:51 pm

I guess i also need to be a mechanic to diagnose a flat tire.

PS. It is well known how “intelligent” Morelli is. I’m not reporting new news here….just tying it to how worthless a State Penn degree is.

Comment by Stuart 04.28.08 @ 5:19 pm

Stuart,

I post on this site with various handles to add some humor, yes, I am a Pitt grad, and you, on a few occasions have hurled implied insults my way.

My problem is that you constantly hammer others with personal insults. If Anthony would have went to Pitt your view would have been much different.

Remember, Pitt recruited Anthony and really put the press on him to become a Panther, if Morelli would have went to Pitt and picked up a diploma … just trying to say, don’t hammer without thinking it through.

Go to a game and support your team, during games over the football season you outpost everyone two-fold.

PS. My wife is a Penn State grad and she is the COO of fortune 1000 company; and yes we both miss the Pitt-PSU football series.

Take care Stuart, one day you will realize there is more to life than Pitt football and basketball and calling other people stupid.

Comment by Greg Morelli 04.28.08 @ 6:17 pm

“implied insults” – wtf does that mean? I have shown why what you said is dumb and you are upset? Please quote these “insults” for me.

I stand by what i said above 100%. For you to assume any of that is inuslting is not my problem. I support Pitt athletics both financially and by attending SOME games. I apologize if this isn’t good enough for you that i don’t attend EVERY game for reasons that are none of your business. I could care less about your occupation, your wifes occupation, or your dogs occupation – its not WHO said something, its WHAT they said that matters. A two year old makes more sense than some posters. What i said in my original post was about the revisionist history of the “great flacco” – go ahead and refute what i said, not attack who said it – as i did in my post. And if i said something moronic, go ahead and show my why, and call me a moron. I’ll defend what i said.

And FCS stop reading what i write if it bothers you so much. You tell us you’re inteligent – why is it so hard for you to skip my posts (or even stop counting them)?

Comment by Stuart 04.28.08 @ 7:02 pm

My first impression from Morelli was that I saw him at a couple of times at Pitt ganes when he was a HS senior, and both times he he wore a Penn Hills jersey with his name on the back … and I thought “Boy, what a hotdog!”

Comment by wild Bill 04.28.08 @ 7:41 pm

Sorry I missed it, but in what round did Greg Lee get drafted?

Comment by Gas 04.28.08 @ 8:18 pm

Not 100% on Strong, but Joe Clermond went to Chicago as a free agent and Darrell Strong signed with Oakland. No idea about any other undrafted seniors.

Comment by mjb 04.29.08 @ 11:39 am

Don’t understand the instults lobbed at Greg Lee…i think everyone will admit he made a mistake and got some bad advice from an awful agent – i don’t recall anyone saying he should have been drafted in any certain round.

That’s his ’07 Mock Draft. Always useful to see how accurate these things aren’t. While I think Brohm will be a better pro than Ryan, he certainly wasn’t the #1 pick.

Comment by Maz 04.29.08 @ 4:48 pm

Sorry, his April ’07 mock of the ’08 draft. Sorry that was unclear.

Comment by Maz 04.29.08 @ 4:48 pm

Regarding the ’09 mock draft, I completely forgot that Shady will be draft eligible after next season. Hopefully the team will be good enough this year that he’ll want to stick around for a little longer.

Comment by matt 04.29.08 @ 4:53 pm

Don’t get your hopes up about Shady. He is an amazing talent and I wouldn’t be surprised if he bolts.

Fitzgerald did the same thing after his two year stint at Pitt.

Besides, we got Shariff Harris to fill in. 😉

Comment by Ryan M. 04.29.08 @ 7:33 pm

lets hope shady and others like him end up staying for the college experience, the chance to earn a degree and the opportunity to win a national championship. Why are these kids so eager to grow up and become adults in the real world? Well, the answer is money of course but many of these kids never grow up. That is a disgrace to the collegiate ranks and NFL. Ultimately, it is up to those individuals to shape up but the system sure the hell doesn’t try to stop these kids from bolting too soon. They make tons of money for these schools and are playing in the minor leagues for the NFL. Pay them for it and lets stop pretending there is such a thing as a scholar athlete.

Comment by mike 04.29.08 @ 9:12 pm

and mr morelli, I don’t give a flippin shit if your wife is a State Penn alumna and COO of a Fortune 1000 company. Take your bragging elsewhere, grow some thicker skin and get some balls.
