The Blue-Gold game fanfest is underway. I would love to be there tonight. Of course the one flaw in all of this planning for the festivities.

Where the Blue-Gold Game drew an announced attendance of 2,103 last year, Pederson is hoping to lure more fans today with free admission and other enticements. Pitt players will sign autographs in the Gate A plaza from 4 to 4:30 p.m., followed by live music and entertainment before the 6 p.m. kickoff of the two-hour scrimmage.

Former Panthers greats now in the NFL — Ruben Brown, Claude Harriott, Tyler Palko, Darrelle Revis and Charles Spencer among them — will make appearances and drop by the broadcast booth for in-game interviews.

“We’re going to build events around the game so that the two hours before kickoff are family-fun time,” Pederson said. “Obviously, we think it’s important to raise our profile every chance we get. The opportunity to put it on the NFL Network gives us a chance to have a nationwide presence for the spring game, which we think is spectacular.”

What? No Rod Rutherford? He’s up in Erie now.

Fantastic. Excellent. Great to bring back former players and having them interact with the fans. Can’t say enough great things about that. That the former players are willing to do this, and the school reached out to them is a great change.
Of course, tonight is also the first night of Passover. Kind of an important night for some of us. Aren’t there any Jews in the Pitt Athletic Department? Hopefully there will still be a sizable crowd.
I am happy the game is on the NFL Network at least. I can still watch it. Plus there’s the admitted recruiting angle.

Because the game is televised, it will have to fit in the allotted two-hour window and that means the second-half clock likely will run unabated and the length of the third and fourth quarters will be determined by time constraints. Wannstedt said he’d like the game to end at the same time the broadcast is over.

Wannstedt said the television exposure is excellent for the program and might provide a recruiting boost.

“Anytime you have a chance to get some exposure, it is a good thing,” Wannstedt said. “I mean, I didn’t get a chance to watch any of the Texas or the Florida spring games, but we had them on in the locker rooms after practice and our guys were able to look up there and see them. And I think being on national television says something about the program.

“And also, the prospective recruits who can’t get to the game, the non-local kids, the kids in New Jersey, Florida and Maryland, they will be watching.”

Assuming they know somebody with the NFL Network. It’s not like they can go to the bars.

Nice catch by Dickerson.

This is fun but I can’t wait to see the incoming freshmen start to practice. Dickerson looks comfortable finally and it’s nice to see how good our receivers are.

Comment by Panthoor 04.19.08 @ 6:40 pm

…and as soon as I praised our receivers, we get a drop hehe.

Comment by Panthoor 04.19.08 @ 6:41 pm

Cross really has some nice moves. All the QBs are doing great. We go from famine to feast.

Offense did well. Shariff Harris is a big kid and could end up as our third RB. Of Course it’s still early and we haven’t seen the freshmen but it’s nice to look ahead to football season.

Some conclusions from the game:

1. Dickerson looked pretty good at TE. His speed really showed when he caught that crossing route and blew right past Mckillop for a long gain.

2. QB play was good. Stull managed well, Bostick’s release looked a lot quicker, Smith has a cannon for an arm and made some decent throws, and Cross really showed his ability to run around.

3. Shariff Harris is a stud. He runs really hard for a freshman, and like Panthoor said, could end up as the third RB (although I think Collier may challenge him)

4. Didn’t see much of the defense, as they were in a conservative set and only rushed 4 most of the game. As such, we won’t truly know how bad the O-Line is until later. CB’s played off the WR’s most of the game also, so not much press coverage. The Defense got a few sacks, mostly on Smith and Bostick on the few plays they blitzed.

** For those of you who didn’t hear it during the broadcast around a 100 times, Pat Bostick did indeed lose weight. (Chris Gardocki also has never had a punt blocked)

All in all, a good scrimmage to watch just to see where the team stands.

What type of crowd did they get for the “game” tonight? I remember some recruit talking about wanting to go to a school because they filled their stadium for the spring scrimmage, and I hope one day Pitt can at least draw more than 2,000.

I don’t have NFL Network, but my friend that does DVRed it for me and I’m gonna go check it out over at his place tomorrow.

I was there, looked like about 8-9 thousand. The parking lots outside the stadium were full, and both sides of the field had a lot of people. Definitely the best turnout in years.

Jimbo Covert’s Dad–Post Gazette this AM reported ~7,600 attendance. Now if it is continued to be scheduled and marketed well 10,000 plus could be possible if/when there is consistent big on the field sfuture success.

Comment by pitt1972 04.20.08 @ 10:23 am

Definitely a step in the right direction. P-G said there were 7,549 in attendance. Not only was there a better turnout but the atmosphere was great. By how many people were tailgating I thought there would be about 20k when we got in there. They did a great job with the autograph session / live music / etc. I don’t know if there’s anything else the athletic department can do to get people to show up.

It didn’t look like there were any students down there yesterday- as usual.

The only negativefor me was the Live Band in the Great Hall. It was so loud in there you couldn’t hear a thing. I just thought it way too loud for young children. Esp when they had things for the kids to do there.

I know, speaking from the students’ perspective, finals start tomorrow. Most of my friends that I talked to couldn’t attend mostly because of studying. I went, mostly cause my first final isn’t until Tuesday so I have the extra day of studying, but having the game on a) Passover and b) the Saturday right before finals, probably isn’t the best idea. If they’d had it a week earlier, I guarantee attendance would have been another one or two thousand.

Comment by merlin 04.20.08 @ 1:31 pm

I was there, decent crowd, could have been better, noticed some students. Over heard a couple of tailgating students complaining about, and making fun of, a couple of their friends for not attending, because they were studying for finals. It seemed to me if all of the tailgater’s were actually in the stadium the attendance would have easily been around or over 10k. Maybe they didn’t know it was free admission? But yeah, it did seem to be a bad weekend to hold the game.

There were some very nice things that happened on the field. I stayed up last night and watched the replay on the NFL Network. Basically it was a 2-hour commercial for Pitt Football. There were a lot of young guys out there making plays. I can’t wait to see Harris in a “live” situation. His dad said even though he is listed at 190 he is now up to 217 pounds. He looks solid. And the hair is cool.

Comment by Z 04.20.08 @ 2:48 pm

Harris is a stud RB and it showed last night. Collier is looking at Shariff’s back from now on, and LSH better be worried also. Harris’s TD run was a thing of beauty (happened right in front of me) and althought it might looked like we missed tackles on it – watch again. He made every defender miss.

Comment by Reed 04.20.08 @ 3:05 pm

I also watched the replay. I was impressed with the O, granted the D wasn’t running much. The running game and pass protection was a hell of alot better than I expected. Stull looks like a competent QB. Bostick looks a hell of alot better, physically and in regards to his throwing motion. Dickerson looks like he could be an absolute stud at TE and so does Shariff Harris- man that kid can play. We look like we are gonna have a really tough squad. Im excited about what Shady can do when he has an offense that can pass the ball.
