Looking to the Carolinas

Pitt looks like it is working on a small forward out of North Carolina (via Big East Blog).

By the start of school, Marhold, now 6-7, came to campus at 215 pounds, and he hasn’t slowed down his work rate.

“Andre has improved 100 percent from last year,” Lewis said. “He’s a gym rat. He really buys into it. He works hard. He leaves our practices now and goes and works out again.”

Marhold averages 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Vikings, who play at Harding tonight in a second-round game of the N.C. 4A playoffs. Besides the Clemson offer, Lewis said Marhold is getting serious recruiting interest from Charlotte, N.C. State, Pittsburgh, Virginia and Winthrop.

Lewis said the schools like Marhold’s long wingspan, his strength and his athleticism. Marhold dunks effortlessly in games from a flat-footed position and jumps over similar players for soft moves around the basket.

“He jumps so high,” teammate Kyle Gaillard said, “sometimes I think he’ll hit his head on the ceiling.”

Telep, the national recruiting analyst for scout.com, thinks Marhold is a potential national top 100 player next year and among the top five or six in a 2009 N.C. class that could be the best in years.

“He’s a guy who is gradually earning high major-level offers,” Telep said. “He’s got a chance to play in one of the big leagues in college because of his athleticism. He just needs to continue to work on his perimeter shot and his overall game.”

Right now, he’s a 3-star prospect at the small forward position. In the ESPN.com/Scouts, Inc. evaluation (Insider subs.), they see him as a tweener at the forward spot.

Marhold is not a true small forward or power forward, but he can do some of the things that coaches look for in both positions. He is explosive, finishes well at the rim and is good in transition. Marhold only has average perimeter skills and needs to improve in all areas as a perimeter player. He needs to work on his 3-point shooting, ball handling and decision making as a player.

The one thing all agree is that he has a high motor, works hard and can get better.

They might do well to look at the kid quoted in the article too……Galliard is a 6’7″ shooting guard and rising fast down here. Athletically, not the best, but can shoot it. Also, North Meck High has one of the best freshmen in the nation…6’7″ Bernard Sullivan.

Ah, so he’s in charlotte Trevor? Might have to go check out one of their games…

sounds like another Chevy…

Recruiting somebody who needs “work on their perimeter game” is not what I want to hear! We need some freaking shooters! Again, all of the defensive and rebounding lapses aside this season, if we could freaking hit wide-open shots, we’d have 4 losses at the most right now.

Comment by Carmen 02.29.08 @ 9:54 am

Is it just me, or is everyone tired of PITT recruiting “project players” that apparently have “huge upside”. Ya, we are year in and year out a top 25 program, but to get into the tier of a championship caliber program, we need to do something different when it comes to recruiting.

Comment by Justin 02.29.08 @ 12:07 pm

I must agree with Justin, How many players are on the roster and coming in have that label?

We are the class of the big east but it seems we have too many work in progress type players.

Maybe my perception is wrong, any thoughts?

Comment by Roy 02.29.08 @ 1:52 pm

I would say the following big guys that are in the system are projects:

Wallace, Diggs and McGhee

Comment by Stuart Margolin 02.29.08 @ 2:21 pm

He is a project just like damn near every other recruit they go after…We need to get someone in here who can play right away is talented. ( Beasley, Gordon, Ovilby, Rose all freshmen that came right in and made a difference)

Comment by jerom 02.29.08 @ 2:57 pm

I don’t think Nasir Robinson, Ashton Gibbs or Travon Woodall are projects. DeJuan Blair certainly was not a project. McGhee perhaps, but he is a bit more polished than people give him credit for.

I think DeJuan Blair qualifies as a kid who is talented and came right in and played. Fields did the same thing as a freshman. That’s two players in three recruiting classes that came in and made an immediate impact.

The negativity surrounding Pitt’s recruiting has gotten out of control. Beasley is tremendous, but his team isn’t doing any better than Pitt’s with Blair. Gordon is a decent player (way over-hyped if you ask me) but his team is struggling to win a VERY mediocre Big Ten. Rose is great and the only one of the three with a chance to win a championship.

Eventually Pitt will land a player that comes in and puts them over the top. Maybe it happens in the 2009 recruiting class. Lamar Patterson is looking like an excellent start to the class. Pitt is going to be alright. We need this win tomorrow. Let’s Go Pitt!!!!

Recruit a pure shooter please!!!

Comment by J.P. 02.29.08 @ 4:12 pm

Omar, I’m with you. I don’t think Levance is hitting because of his foot. Let’s hope he feels better. Ronald has a shoulder tear. Let’s hope he gets better. Keith has an infected finger. Let’s hope he gets better. Me? All these ailments are giving me a headache….

great article from starkey today:

Comment by Scott 02.29.08 @ 4:56 pm

They need to get Deandre Kane from Schenley who has said he wants to go to Pitt and get a couple of 3 point shooting white kids like Kyle McAlarney of ND.

Comment by MelbaPlace 02.29.08 @ 4:58 pm

Greg,
Yep, all three play for North Meck….Marhold is a junior, Gaillard is a junior, and Sullivan a freshman.

Comment by Trevor 02.29.08 @ 5:28 pm

why not once try to recruit a 4-star player….we dont need 5-stars but a 4 would be nice….why do we not go after talent…if dixon cant recruit, then get someone who can…..if you want to see something interesting, see how many mcdonald all-americans we have had the last 10+ years….NONE…most of those guys are top players who then play for money in the NBA….until then, we are again a 2nd tier team. i think the last one’s were shorter and martin, and before that lane and smith…..we need top tier talent to compete for a better than sweet 16 finish.

Comment by drgags 02.29.08 @ 5:47 pm

Wow, dr. gags. Pitt’s a second tier team? One of those second tier teams that just won 20 games for the SEVENTH year in a row. We’ll be in the NCAA’s again, like all those other second tier teams. Are you suggesting that Bobby Martin or Brian Shorter played in the NBA? Cause last time I checked, neither even had a sniff at the league. Also, were shorter or matin better than DeJaun’s gonna be? Hell no. BTW, Blair, Fields, and Nasir Robinson are all four star recruits.

Comment by Crackbaldo 02.29.08 @ 7:56 pm

Can anyone tell me how many McDs all americans florida had when it won 2 national championships? Thats right, just one. 3 years before that he had 2 sign with him, anyone remember where that team got?

In that class that won 2 national championships, he had one 5 star player, the #5 SF in the country. Last year, we got a 5*, #4 center in the country. We also got a 4* SG. Another 4* SG the year before that. 3 4* kids the year before that. We’re getting another 4* kid next year. As a matter of fact, our team as currently composed has more “stars” on it than the florida national championship team.

How bout you people stop worry about “stars” and McDs bullshit and just worry about how the kids who are here develop and play.

You know who does have a couple of McDs all americans? Syracuse. And if they don’t win out, 99% chance they ain’t even making the tournament for the second year in a row.

Some of you people need to come back to reality.

Comment by Stuart 02.29.08 @ 9:28 pm

Pitt a 2.5 point dog right now…

Comment by Stuart 02.29.08 @ 9:42 pm

Omar, I agree with you 100% on McGhee…I think the kid gets a very bad rap on this blog…The Greg Oden’s of the world come along once every ten years or so. Most big men take a few years to develop. From what I have seen of McGhee, I think he has the potential to be a solid center in the BE and beyond. At least as good as Gray and maybe better because he is already more athletic than Gray was in college.

Comment by HbgFrank 02.29.08 @ 11:44 pm

I like what McGhee has done in the limited minutes he has played. Seems like he’s making an effort and not just a stiff.
However, I think the pace at which he has improved is greatly impaired by his limited playing time. If he could shore up his defense he’d be on the court more. I’d like to see him playing the five, Blair playing the four and Sam at small forward. It would certainly give us more of an inside presence, perhaps help remedy our rebounding issues and maybe even free up our guards for better looks from the outside.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 03.01.08 @ 2:44 am

McGhee is going to be a solid player at Pitt. He has the potential to be more than solid, but who knows how he will develop. He has a very strong upper body and moves better than Gray. Unfortunately he is extremely inexperienced. Dixon should have given him more time early. In his defense, I think he really wanted to redshirt McGhee but the injury situation made that impossible.

Pitt needs this one today. -2.5 means a “pick-em”. Hopefully we can get the W. Let’s Go PITT!!!!

Comment by Omar 03.01.08 @ 9:43 am

Hubert Digger and Bilas all pick SU…i’d say we’re in pretty good shape.

Comment by Stuart 03.01.08 @ 12:00 pm

we need kane from schenly , he never misses
