— The game against Notre Dame is the only kickoff time known right now because NBC has exclusive rights to ND games.

— December in Connecticut will be cold.

— The Backyard Brawl is set for Friday, November 28, the day after Thanksgiving. I wouldn’t mind this game to be played on this day normally, except it could end up being a noon or afternoon game. It’s on ABC, which previously had Texas/Texas A&M in the afternoons for the past few years, but they’re moving that game to Thanksgiving night on ESPN. I’m not really too high on the idea of an afternoon Brawl. Also, it’s always odd not finishing the regular season with WVU.

— The WPIAL championship games will likely be played on Saturday the 29th of November, the day after the Pitt game. Therefore the Friday night game won’t take away from any high school games, plus Pitt would be playing before the field gets torn up by the HS games.

— The game against South Florida comes just five days after playing up in Syracuse. Between traveling across the country and a short practice week, it should be interesting to see how the team responds.

— Following the USF game, Pitt has a a bye week before Navy. That’s an 18 day(!) break. So we have five days off before one game then 18 before the next…something seems weird.

— On both August 30 (Bowling Green) and September 20 (Iowa), the Pirates play a 7:05 pm home game. Expect a noon start (ugh). Remember: a good Pitt team will be forced to play at a bad time because of a baseball team that has had 14 losing seasons and will be out of contention by mid-May. Oh, and I’m still a Buccos fan.

Updates: WPIAL finals will be played the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Pitt-WVU is a noon kickoff on ABC.

According to ESPN, the WVU game is at noon.

I thought the Rutgers game was a home game in October????

Comment by Fcuk Paterno 02.25.08 @ 5:08 pm

I also thought games that aren’t on TV will start no longer than 3pm…does that mean that the Bowling Green and Iowa games will be televised? I could see the Iowa game being picked up by ESPN for the noon slot but Bowling Green?

WPIAL games are the weekend before thanksgiving.

As I student, I’m EXTREMELY upset at this Big East scheduling. The Backyard Brawl is the biggest rivalry in the conference- by having it the day after Thanksgiving at NOON, they’re guaranteeing that every student not from the area (including myself) basically won’t be able to attend unless I’m home for Thanksgiving and then head back to Pittsburgh that night by myself. It’s a ridiculous scheduling move, and the conference should be ashamed of themselves. And it’s clearly not a tradition, last year’s game was held December 1st, a date where ever WVU student who wanted would attend. This is just gonna make Pitt look bad on national television for having most of the out-of-area students unable to attend.

Comment by merlin 02.25.08 @ 5:23 pm

Thanks for the links, guys. And great point merlin, plenty of students from out of town will miss the game.

Comment by Dennis 02.25.08 @ 5:34 pm

which asshole didn’t schedule the South Florida game in December, that is the one trip per year I really look forward to and as for no home games in October that’s ridiculous….

Comment by Marco 02.25.08 @ 5:36 pm

I agree about the WVU game- WTF??? I thought there was going to be a concerted effort to keep it off the weekend of Thanksgiving for exactly this reason -and it isn’t just students who normally leave town for the Thanksgiving weekend. Having the game at noon makes it that much worse. Sunuvabitch!

And the games that will probably be nooners because of the damn Pirates- absolutely ridiculous. The administration listened to the suggestions about the games but apparently couldn’t follow any of them. SO much for tailgating. Also, you have to remember: they’ll be chasing us out of the lots after those games too.

Then there’s the five days between at Syracuse and at USF- Overall this schedule really sucks…

Comment by Dan35 02.25.08 @ 5:38 pm

But for the record: the Rutgers game is on Oct 25th at home.

Comment by Dan35 02.25.08 @ 5:40 pm

I know it sucks for fans who want to go to the WVU game, but I love laying on the couch that day and watching the game on TV.

Comment by Crackbaldo 02.25.08 @ 5:47 pm

Merlin – when I was a student (few years back) I stayed in Pittsburgh several thanksgivings for football games, both WVU and Miami games. How big a fan are you? If you care you will be there

oh and I also drove 6 hours round trip to see Pitt play UConn at the Pete during spring break

Comment by Jamie H 02.25.08 @ 6:06 pm

Crackbaldo — Just make sure the Hoopies don’t burn that couch with you on it.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.25.08 @ 6:07 pm

Jamie-
Believe me, I’m gonna try very hard to get there. My concern isn’t just for me, it’s for the student section as a whole. Pitt’s an 11-hour round trip drive for me, so if I go to the game I’m not gonna be home for most of Thanksgiving. While I don’t mind, I have parents that aren’t Pitt alumni, and don’t really understand the appeal of the Brawl, and might not be willing to let me come back. I know that I am going to try my hardest to get back to Pittsburgh for the game, I was just commenting that I know a lot of students, while they’re fans, aren’t passionate enough (much less able) to cancel Thanksgiving plans and make it back for the game. Just because you drove 3 hours doesn’t make you a huge fan, passion for the team does. It’s only my freshman year but I went to the Brawl, to the Duquesne game, to the Duke game, and I’m going to the WVU basketball game next week, all with my own money. Don’t act like you’re better than the rest of us.

Comment by merlin 02.25.08 @ 6:11 pm

I can see some of the concerns you guys would have with that Friday Backyard Brawl game but I like the idea a lot. I think the last time we played it on that day was 2002. I would have liked to have seen the Brawl get cemented into that December slot though, especially if both teams are playing on that date anyway.

Comment by J.D. 02.25.08 @ 6:21 pm

I might be the only person in the USA who travels back to Pitt for Thanksgiving. I will do everything I can do to rally Pitt support for that Fri.

Good schedule, bad start times. I will just rehash that the Pirates problem would be non-existent if we played on campus. Also – the Big East has never ever done Pitt football any favors – expecting them to cut Pitt a break is pointless. I am going to find myself either wishing for noon starts so I can see the game here in NY on TV or scrambling to attend games in Pittsburgh.

Comment by ChrisA 02.25.08 @ 7:34 pm

I’ll tell you what the noon start for the WVU game means for me…It means I’ll be in the parking lot by 9:00 AM and I’ll be arriving there from Harrisburg…Are you with me Tony?

Comment by HbgFrank 02.25.08 @ 8:13 pm

Just for the record, the Pirates have had 15 consecutive losing seasons.

Even if the Pirates are out the playoff race in August/September (which is likely), if they are playing a team in contention could MLB change the games to the afternoon for TV?

Comment by Sean 02.25.08 @ 8:38 pm

The Pirates haven’t been on national TV in like 2 years I think.

I love them, but they suck!

The 5 day swing between away games is ridiculous. Especially considering that I believe Syracuse and South Florida are farther apart as any two schools in the conference.

Plus, I live in Tampa and the USF game is on a Thursday night, so there’s no guarantee that I can go, unlike if it were on a Saturday.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 02.25.08 @ 8:53 pm

I think the reason for the Friday game with WVU is pretty simple – high school football is all but over by then. Attendance won’t be down too much because of that, which was the real issue with scheduling Friday games. Unfortunately, they picked a crappy weekend – and start time – for student attendance. Hopefully we can get decent attendance from non-students though. If this team plays up to potential, it won’t be an issue.

Comment by mjb 02.25.08 @ 9:25 pm

As a Student, I am very disappointed in the Schedule. Pedersen didn’t listen to one word any of us had to say. With 6 home games, and 3 of them guaranteed to be at Noon….that sucks. Noon games suck in general, and I’m sure there will be more than 3!

But there is one bright side to the Friday WVU game. Buddy passes for students are now $5, so local students can bring friends to help make up for the students that won’t be here.

But it really sucks for us freshman…those Freshman that live far away won’t get to see a Backyard Brawl until their senior year! (If they don’t schedule it on a stupid day in 2010, too!)

Comment by Tony 02.25.08 @ 9:51 pm

I doubt attendance will be a problem for the BYB…WVU fans will probably buy them up. You can get Pitt season ducats cheaper for the cost of maybe 1 or 2 games at MF

Comment by J.D. 02.25.08 @ 10:01 pm

Merlin – I’m just sick of Pitt fans having excuses. Doesnt matter if the Backyard Brawl is on Thanksgiving at 6pm. Pitt fans should be there. Every other bigtime school in the country would have a guaranteed sellout

Comment by Jamie H 02.25.08 @ 10:09 pm

And it isn’t fair to place the blame solely on the back of Pederson — the Big East screwed Pitt – the problem isn’t with non-con games (Pederson’s responsibility), the problem is with Big East games… Shame on the Big East if anyone.

But really — it’s time for the excuses to end; get your butts in the seats whenever the games may be – you’re going to want to be there for the ride.

Comment by John from DC 02.25.08 @ 10:39 pm

Jamie-
I’m on your side in this. I’m going to be at that game. I was merely complaining that if the school wants 100% attendance, they shouldn’t allow the conference to schedule it when they do. True fans such as myself, and a few of my classmates will find a way to be there. I was talking more from the perspective of the casual fan- someone who likes the team but isn’t going to sacrifice valuable family time and a national holiday to watch a football game. I will be there, I will be cheering as loud as anybody there, but I wasn’t directing my post only for the die-hard fans. In a perfect world, everybody would be there, but in a perfect world the Zoo would sell out for every game too.

Comment by merlin 02.26.08 @ 12:47 am

This will be one of Pederson’s early challenges–he basically dared the Big East in saying there would be no games starting before 3 unless they were televised. Let’s see if he can get something done with those Pirates game conflicts.

What, I don’t know. Why not change the Buccos’ to a 12:35 start and Pitt to 7?

Comment by jason 02.26.08 @ 5:40 am

My point was that on September 20, the Pirates face the Astros. If Houston is in a tight race for the division or wild card, maybe MLB would move the game to the afternoon for TV. I think the only other way the Pirates get a game on TV in late September is if Bonds, Clemente and Stargell are all playing. People would tune in to see that!

Comment by Sean 02.26.08 @ 7:08 am

part of the problem is that “trained-geese” is so beholden to tv as the be all end all. the biggest straw that stirs the drink in college football is TRADITION, and the only game the big east can market with TRADITION is Pitt/WVU. it should be THE marquee game of the big east, especially after last year. but instead of highlighting the game as the “end of year” classic that it is, mikey t pimps it out to abc for a noon start the day after turkey day. the big east will continue to be looked down on because of its lack of tradition by the rest of the bcs and the big east administration fails to recognize that. in fact, the one TRADITION the big east is now known for is being the WWL’s bitch.

now, with that being said…ENOUGH OF THE EXCUSES! GO TO THE FRIGGIN GAMES! i think some fans would find reasons to complain if the game was being played in their own backyard. if its important enough, you will find a way to make the game and have a good time.

Comment by ECH 02.26.08 @ 8:07 am

Crackbaldo, get off your ass and go to the freakin game!!! I don’t care where you live because this could be the biggest game of the year. All Pitt fans need to quit worrying about the start times and support their teams. Not going is only hurting the team and letting other people knock our fans and the yellow seats!!!

Hail to Pitt!!!

Comment by Fcuk Paterno 02.26.08 @ 8:39 am

One other thing, Pitt still shows the WVU being a “TBA” so maybe the noon start isn’t final???

Comment by Fcuk Paterno 02.26.08 @ 8:40 am

Merlin, I totally understand your point. I agree thats how it will probably turn out, and its unfortunate. I just wish Pitt fans weren’t so half-assed.

Comment by Jamie H 02.26.08 @ 8:57 am

bottom line is that if we win games and are contenders for the BE title, people will be at the game, no matter the time or day … even though people should still support the team if we are contenders or not, but thats just how some pitt fans are

Comment by jtads14 02.26.08 @ 9:18 am

UPDATE:
I contacted the Pitt Athletic Office and they said that this is a “TBA” game and the time is not finalized and probably wont be until the season starts. I’d suggest everyone contacting Pitt and urging them to have game as night game. Noon or not, i’ll be there!!!

Comment by Fcuk Paterno 02.26.08 @ 9:39 am

Its too ealry to blame Pedersen for this schedule, he didnt have much time or leverage here. Look for the changes to start next year and years to come. The fact that he even asked the fans for input says that he is willing to listen – much more than Jeff Long ever did. As many others said. Start winning and the seats will magically fill up.

Comment by Rex 02.26.08 @ 10:11 am

I think the point is this- with only 6 home games for a team we spend our energy, time and money on all year, we just want the best the administration can give us.

A 3:30 or 4 o’clock game is way better than a noon game- better for tailgating (most importantly), better for the students, and better for a dad whose kid has a little league game.

I don’t think its outrageous for students to want to play our biggest rival on a weekend when the entire school is not shut down. Have you been through Oakland during Thanksgiving break? It’s a ghost town. I agree that the scheduling shouldn’t matter- it doesn’t to me- but the reality is that having WVU at noon the day after Thanksgiving is not good for Pitt. WVU last game of the season, 7PM start would’ve been insane.

Having said that… MAN, I CANNOT FRICKIN WAIT FOR THE SEASON TO START.

Comment by Dan35 02.26.08 @ 1:41 pm

All,

Me and my buddy are planning a trip to the Big East tourny this year. We are both students, so tickets to the games themselves are not a problem. We also have a way to-from New York. But we desparately need some advice on a hotel to stay at. We dont need anything nice, were basically looking for the cheapest thing we can put up with. We are willing to get something outside of the city and travel to the games by bus, subway, etc. Please let me know if anyone has ANY suggestions. Thanks.

You can reply on here, or email works: fulltiltmatt@hotmail.com

p.s. Im a bit dissapointed with the schedule as well with all the noon games

Comment by Matt D 02.26.08 @ 1:56 pm

noon doesn’t do it for me. no time to tailgate. I’m not flying up for this one then.

Comment by mike 02.26.08 @ 1:58 pm

Merlin, your point is well taken about students returning from a distance to attend the brawl. The games should be centered around the students presently attending college, but if there is one group that has regularly let the football teams down, it has been the student sections. I’ve attended practically ever game since Pitt moved into Heinz Field, and too often my buddies and I have commented how sparce the attendance is in the student sections. Rarely, if ever, has the upper deck student section been filled. Too many Pitt students wouldn’t walk across the street to watch their team play. The Oakland Zoo is an example of the energy and impact students have on a game and the players. Shady mentioned that the love he received from the zoo while attending a BB game was instrumental in him selecting Pitt. My point: the students haven’t embraced their own team and because of this fact very little pressure can be applied by the Pitt AD to accomadate their fans. Pitt students need to either continue to party at the stadium, or begin to party at the stadium. Either way, the students are the individuals that bring the energy to the crowd and create the atmosphere. Merlin, I take my hat off to students like you, at least you care.

Comment by ltl 02.26.08 @ 2:04 pm

I’m actually excited about the USF game on October 2. It looks like I’ll be able to hook up with a few buddies from undergrad and make the trip to lovely Tampa.

Also, off topic, but for those of you old enough to remember him, Scottie the hot dog vendor is apparently back on his old corner selling pecans.

Comment by johnny 02.26.08 @ 2:29 pm

Frank in HBG we leave for the brawl making sure that we have no less then 3 hours to get into game shape! That is a a game that screams drink a half case prior to entering the stadium.

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 02.26.08 @ 2:33 pm

Itl-
Even though the Oakland Zoo fills up for the big games, we’re still disappointing in terms of the potential of the student section. Cheering dying by the second half of less-important games, students leaving at halftime, and poor attendance for some Big East games (Providence, Louisville) still annoys those in the Zoo that are there for every game. The most annoying part is that we know we can’t MAKE people care. It’s something you have to come in with. Sadly, the only way to get people to really be into it is to win, and to do it for a long time. It’s one thing to go to Michigan, or PSU, or WVU, because they don’t have another team in the area to support. Here, we’re battling for fans with the Steelers- people have another football team in the area to turn to, one not divided by college loyalties. Really the only thing we can do as fans is to try and convince our friends to come, cheer as loud as we can, and hope our team continues to improve, which will mean attendance and interest will continue to improve.

Comment by merlin 02.26.08 @ 2:44 pm

The big east taking a big old shit on Pitt again. Whats new.

In 2 years no one will even know where WVU is located and we’ll be the top program in the big east. Maybe then we’ll finally get some respect, and they’ll start giving us an advantage in scheduling, instead of cement blocks around our ankles. I thought USF was going to be our hardest game this year – and they found a way to make it even harder. Unbelievable. I hate this fucking conference sometimes.

Comment by Stuart 02.26.08 @ 3:19 pm

ltl – Actually, very rarely are there ANY students in the upper deck at Heinz Field. I can’t remember the last time it was filled – maybe that cold Thanksgiving night when we won to go to the Fiesta Bowl or the Notre Dame game Wanny’s first year.

Comment by Kevin 02.26.08 @ 3:39 pm

I definitely agree about the awful performance of the students.

For the HOMECOMING game against Cincinnatti- a ranked big east opponent that we BEAT- there was practically no one in the student section and kids were leaving the game at halftime. They better get it together because it was beyond pathetic last year.

Comment by Dan35 02.26.08 @ 4:15 pm

And you know what? If you can’t go out drinking on Friday night, get up at 9, start drinking again and go watch a football game, then you’re too damn old to be in college.

Comment by Dan35 02.26.08 @ 4:17 pm

Merlin, I can buy the split fanbase for the adult Pittsburgher, but I have trouble with that excuse for the actual college student. Yes winning is often the answer for putting fans in the seats, but bandwagon fans aren’t true Pitt fans anyway. This site is filled with loyal Pitt fans; we may not all agree, but we all bleed blue and gold. Does anyone have and idea that could genuinely produce a loyal Pitt following outside of winning the next 30 games?

Comment by ltl 02.26.08 @ 4:24 pm

Well I think the problem is….I know part of the reason I came to Pitt is because I wanted a school whose athletics I could really get behind. I’ll admit I wasn’t raised a Pitt fan, but hopefully you all won’t hold that against me. The thing is, you’re going to get bandwagon fans- the people that came to Pitt for other reasons and just happen to enjoy the occasional football game, but it’s not really part of the school to them. Kids will go if they think they’re gonna see a good game, get on TV, or if they have nothing better to do. Having to go off-campus hurts attendance as well- it’s one thing to walk 5 minutes to the Pete, but the bandwagon students don’t wanna take the 10 minute bus ride, the walk, etc. It’s stupid but what CAN you do? You can win. You can make this program something to be proud of, and you’ll GET those kids who want to come to Pitt for the athletics as well as the academics.

And the hits keep coming…The Lady Panthers take down the 13th ranked Lady Neers!!! Actually, I watched most of the game and it was very entertaining the whole time. As for all of the comments above about our students not showing up for FB games, I have posted here in the past that this is the most disappointing aspect of our attendance problem. However, in large part, I think the students just follow the lead of the fan base in general…IF big crowds are showing up, then they want to be a part of it; if the crowds is not there, then they don’t want to be there. I’ll keep going no mattter what, but for the so called “football town” of Pittsburgh, when it comes to Pitt FB attendance, the only cure that will work is the Al Davis treatment: Just win baby! It’s a damn shame, but that’s how it is in Pittsburgh.

Comment by HbgFrank 02.26.08 @ 11:04 pm

I find that the majority of student football fans are from the Pittsburgh area. They grew up watching Pitt, they hear stories from their parents, they’ve followed the program. Pitt has a lot of students from all parts of the state and country. I think that they have a harded time rooting for a team that they never followed and they don’t want to spend their energy getting on a bus to watch a lousy team. Once they start winning it will change. Every student will tell their kids they saw Shady McCoy play in college, but that wont be the truth.

One of the most infuriating things I’ve heard this year was a Pitt student in line waiting to get into the Zoo. He was talking it up with the coach from Nova a few days before and told him he was from Philly and was secretly a bigger Nova fan. That is something I have a problem with. Whether you like the city or not, cheer for your school.

Comment by pat 02.27.08 @ 12:37 am

I’m surprised at so many complaints about the Friday WVU game. That slot is highly sought after by colleges wanting to be on national TV. Thanksgiving Thursday and the following Friday are actually bigger then New Year’s day is terms of program exposure in that it’s not as saturated as the Bowl lineups are with multiple games on every channel.

As far as tradition goes – it means nothing to anyone outside of PGH really – what the PITT, the BE and Media are looking at are $$, pure and simple. But that said, the Thanksgiving & Friday afterward are as close to tradition as PITT gets. That’s when all the PITT vs PSU and WVU classics were scheduled.

Comment by Reed 02.27.08 @ 4:45 am

stuart – how many games do you go too??? you go to all of the home games or just spend your entire time on this website?

do you sell off your tickets like to do for the basetball games?

Comment by WHAT_THE_???? 02.27.08 @ 12:03 pm

I’m not going to lie, tickets are expensive when you add up the cost of the donation and the price for the tickets. I’d rather have first level seats for half the games, and sell the other half to finance/defer the cost, then go to every game in the nose bleeds. Plus, scheduling doesn’t allow me to go to every game anyways. To each their own… Hopefully i’ll be at the game tonight.

Why does everyone scoff at me again for suggesting the Big East is garbage and that we should do all we can to get out or organize a mass defection of the football schools to form a separate conference?

First of all, I know there are some current legal issues with the TV contract, the payoff for leaving, with the hallowed Big East name, with playing the hoops tourneys at MSG. IMO, none of those are insurmountable, especially with *cough* the brilliant legal mind running our university. But especially with the geeky moron in charge of the conference.

You have problems with the scheduling of the brawl? With the fact we need to schedule I-AA garbage because there aren’t enough conference opponents? With the ass-smooching given to Notre Dame? With having jokes like Marquette and DePaul in hoops only (keeping us from playing each of our hoops rivals twice a year)? With the retards who blatantly, desperately were ordered to give WVU the Brawl last year (and don’t think the garbage scheduling this year isn’t payback in some way).

Got problems with all those things? Petition Nordberg (or more important, all the trustees, since Nordy apparently has his nose up Tranghese’s arse) to get us out.

Comment by geeman2001 02.27.08 @ 6:35 pm
