After 10 pm. That’s when I was finally able to sit down and watch this. So many things to get done even after the kid’s holiday concert. Needless to say, I was screwed. By 9:20, I stole a glance at a sports website to check something else before I could get to the TV. I caught that the game was in OT. I was just hoping it would end by 9:30 — I extended the taping a half-hour.

Three phone calls came starting at 9:35. I had to ignore each of them. Each time, though, apparently my face betrayed my emotions. The wife thought I might be heading for a nervous breakdown. I just don’t know as I type this whether I have the final minutes on the DVR.
…Hideous call by one official. Denying the charge call on Nelson taken by Cook. Instead, they call something against Young — but count the basket. Then they give a call back to Pitt. At best, it might fire the team up a little more with the “everyone is out to get us” type mentality kicking in.

It did seem to embarrass the officials with that bad of a call — that they looked at to determine who it was on. Pitt is getting some more calls. Less than 5 minutes into the half, Pitt’s in the bonus.

Wow. A 12-0 Pitt run with under 6 minutes. Pitt with a 50-48 lead. Complete defensive battle. Both teams just contesting everything. Making it a battle up and down the court. Brutal. Beautiful.

OT.

Oh, crap. Cook had his left knee buckle. Hate to think it, but all you can think is ACL.

Duke fans chanting for Duke as Mike Cook lies on the floor. Hell, even Domer fans have more class.

DeJuan Blair fouls out. Huge for Duke that Lance Thomas was able to play. If not, they would have lost at least Henderson if not Nelson by now.

Time runs out on the DVR with 56.3 seconds left. Duke with the ball and up 63-62.

OMG!!!!

Pitt won?!?!?!?

Levance Fields. Wow.

Here’s the link to the ESPN video highlights.

Nothing like being the team that comes back in the second half after a horrible 1st half. It beats beating up your own team for choking and blowing it.

Losing Cook, though, is brutal. There is love and hate for Cook from fans. I understand it, but I am a fan. Gilbert Brown is going to have to be huge. It also means more size deficiency issues. Benjamin and Wanamaker will get more action in a 3-guard line-up. That or Cassin Diggs and McGhee will have to make a huge jump.

Slightly OT 😉

Friend of Pensblog figured i’d see your recap after that One hell of a game. Sucks you missed the end of it. I was going crazy trying to watch the Pens, Pitt, and the Steelers.

What a game, one that will live up there in my weak basketball memory. Pitt sucks me in every year because they are a local team for me, but i confess i am more a UNC basketball fan.

Big win for Pitt, bad lost for your DVR!

Only to wake this morning and HOLY SH*T!!!!!!

I AM NOT WORTHY; IAM NOT WORTHY; I AM NOT WORTHY

Maybe this year we have true reason to believe that Pitt bball can advance from the Sweet Sixteen to the Elite 8. And, dare I consider the Final Four?

HAIL PITT!

It was a good move for Collier to committ to SU, he would never play at Pitt. Great win for the basketball program.

I’m sure Chas will put the link on later..but read Andy’s Katz’s writeup on the game on espn.com..Andy always has nice things to say about Pitt and Dixon but this one is really good….a must read.

As an alum of Pitt, my heart did flip-flops watching this game. As disgusted as I was with that sloppy first half, I thought at half-time, “they’re only down by 10…”

I confess that I put my daughter to bed, and missed most of Pitt’s comeback in the second half (ignoring the game when Pitt’s down always seems to work for me.) I tuned back in when Pitt went ahead by Sam Cook’s FT. What a second half! What poor officiating! And what a terribly bad thing to happen to Mike Cook.

Am very curious to see what respect Pitt receives in the polls after this. There’s some worthy teams still above them, but this win has to put Pitt on their doorstep. C’mon Lunardi…c’mon Parrish, c’mon all you Pitt haters out there. Give us a little love!

Always, always, always, set the DVR for an extra 30 minutes for sporting events!

Comment by Mike 12.21.07 @ 9:30 am

Chas…. thats an amateur mistake. Everyone knows that you tape games an hour past the end AT LEAST. A Close game on ESPN that goes to overtime will end after 9:30. I feel bad but you should know better!

Comment by Jamie H 12.21.07 @ 9:37 am

I ran into Charles Small in the bathroom at halftime and he assured me Fields would lead us back. Still reeling from last night, but it was worth it. Now I’ve got to get back to SC…

this was more satisfying then being at the garden for the BET championship win……amazing amazing game…..and a signature win for this program…..

hope cook gets better….that looked real bad…and f duke fans for doing stupid chants while he’s writhing in pain…..we went crazy when that happened…..i thought major fights were going to break out the whole OT……

PITT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what a win. Its amazing the difference a year makes. We go from a team with no stars to a team with 3- Blair, Fields and Young. Each was huge in that win and I would like to point out that Young and Fields have become go to guys when we need some tough points which we have never had before.
Losing Cook is huge but I was really impressed with Brown. He is freak and his blocks were huge. He has all the skills and if he gains the confidence he will be huge

Comment by dan 12.21.07 @ 12:27 pm

Cook is gone for the season which may not be such a bad thing, everytime he touches the ball he turns it over…Im sorry Ramon needs to come off the bench, I mean what has he done this year, he cant create his own shot and is terrible at handling the ball. After Blair, Young, and Fields the team gets a little iffy..Wannamaker needs to be getting more time. Lets see what Brown can due now as the starter. OVERALL great win…

Comment by J 12.21.07 @ 1:40 pm

and by the way for anyone at the game… i was the one that blew a chance at halftime to win a trip to pinehurst!! the first shot was so pure too….

Comment by Tray 12.21.07 @ 2:35 pm

Cool little info from the game:

As we’re leaving the Garden, we turn around and see Jay Williams, the former Duke stud, behind us. We told him that it would have helped if he was out there to which he replied “I’ve got my championships man, it’s your team’s turn. You guys are F’n good.” Awesome awesome awesome win!

I thought Duke was a class school. I’ll never look at them or their fans the same way again.

Comment by Eric R 12.21.07 @ 5:14 pm

What gave you the idea they were a class school? The are the single most classless fans (worse than even WVU) i’ve ever seen or heard. May they all burn in hell. Disgusting. It took them all of 1 game to be in a dead heat with Uconn as bball programs i hate most.

Comment by Stuart 12.21.07 @ 5:46 pm

Pitt fans chanting “Show some class, show some class” at the Duke fans was priceless.

Comment by fred 12.21.07 @ 8:11 pm

That was one heck of a game.. I am just back at my hotel now. I heard 13-9, i heard alot of PSU sucks, i sat next to a duke fan that tried to tell me duke was going to blow pitt out and that pitt is not legit. COMPLETE JERK. He tried to cheer for pitt for a little, becuase he said he was tired of duke blowing out teams… wow did he get a shocker.

Refs were absolutely horrible. the pitt fans were great though. Slapped hands with everyone after the game. Had no voice left. What a fun game. Constantly loud.

Comment by Adam 12.21.07 @ 11:25 pm

The Duke bench, and fans looked liked they were in shock, and were ging to cry when the game ended. Priceless!!!

Comment by Kenny 12.22.07 @ 12:20 pm

Staurt, I’m an idiot. I figured it out. Thanks for posting this information

Comment by TMGPanther 12.23.07 @ 11:29 am

I was at this game and it was amazing. I was even suprised at how much class the general population of Duke fans showed after the game was over, exiting the building. However, there was one little thing that really irked my buddies and me.

During one of the breaks, (halftime maybe?) Dick Groat was inducted into the college basketball HOF. Great ceremony for a great player. The video focused on his time at Duke and his time with the Pirates. Perfect setting really with everyone cheering….except for a strong number of Dukie babies sitting on their asses, silent. Really disrespectful to a guy who is still the 15th leading scorer of your precious program.

Needless to say we were pretty irritated, especially the one member of our group who nearly started a fight over the ordeal. But anyways- this little display of classlessness made us just a little louder and more obnoxious, and the victory much sweeter.
