December 1, 2007

We did it. We seriously just did it. The Pitt Panthers just knocked those stupid toothless West Virginians out of the BCS Championship game. This is un-freakin-real. The biggest win for this program in over 20 years? Quite possibly. It means absolutely nothing to the 2007 season but in the long run it looks great for recruiting, it was against our biggest rival, and it was against the #2 team in the nation. Also gives a ton of positive feelings going into next year.

ESPN has helped Pitt tell the world who LeSean McCoy is. He looked good and carried the load a ton of times. Also very nice to see the announcers give a ton of love to Scott McKillop, who leads the NCAA is tackles. Pitt better advertise the hell out of those two next season.

On the defensive side, we fundamentally tackled so well. There were different blitzing schemes, we kept containment on their runners, and we just played like we wanted it so bad. I’ve been on Paul Rhoads’ ass all year but today I give him a ton of respect.

If you haven’t seen Rich Rodriguez’s post-game press conference, go watch it now. It’s great watching him try to find something to say but pretty much stumble with his words. Almost on the verge of tears. The best part is that you can hear the Pitt players cheering and yelling in the background.

Holy crap, we really won!!!

WVU folks will say White’s injury is the reason they lost, and when they do we can all laugh in their face. Jarrett Brown is a great QB, and it’s not like the drop-off that occurred when we lost Stull. not to mention we also didn’t have Kinder, Mustakas, Byham, and others. The main reason White’s injury wasn’t the reason is because the refs tried their best to screw us. The Big East wanted WVU in the BCS title game, no doubt. Two bad holding calls on Oderick Turner and then not calling it when Turner was trying to catch the pass was complete crap. Conspiracy theory? Confirmed.

No one thought we could do it. Nobody. I never thought we’d win, but there was that sliver in my heart that recognized the chance was there. Go streaking! Go drink excessive amounts of alcohol! Go crazy! I love it. I love it. I LOVE IT.

P.S. — It’s clear why Pitt won. It had to be that pep talk from Lou Holtz on ESPN. That “respecth” he spoke of — I think Pitt earned it tonight.

P.S.S. — A replay of the game can be seen on ESPN at 3:30 am. Set your DVRs accordingly.

I think we’re breaking the site!! This is awesome!!! P-I-T-T LETS GO PITT!

Biggest win since the Sugar bowl victory over GA

Comment by TMGPanther 12.01.07 @ 11:58 pm

Yeah, we only won because White was out. How many points did WVU have late in the 2nd when White went out? Zero.

Comment by Jon C 12.01.07 @ 11:58 pm

This message is to all of the DW haters out there… I’m not talking to the people who made legimate comments about the progress of the team or the need to go to a bowl next year or else…I’m talking to the out and out haters who constantly railed about DW and his success with da Bears and Dolphins (i.e. his being paid millions to coach at the highest level there is)…this message is for you: Shut The Fuck Up and never come back here again!!!! As an alum, I will glady trade this 5 and 7 season, culiminated by booting WVU out of the BCS title game, on their field, when they were favored by 38 points, for a 7 and 5 season with a trip to the Insight.com bowl! F the hoopies and F the haters!!! I have posted in this site before that talent on the field wins a lot more games than coaches do…We have a lot of talent on defense, next year we should have an offense that supports them better…I said it before and I’ll say it again, we will contend for the BE championship next year…HAIL TO PITT…F THE HOOPIES!!! I wonder if we will hear from any of their trolls now?

Comment by HbgFrank 12.02.07 @ 12:03 am

Let’s Go PITT !!!! F’ W’Va Mountainqueers! I knew I would be happy tonight 1 way or another! You can still fire Paul Rhoads !!!

Comment by Joe Pa's gay lover 12.02.07 @ 12:04 am

I know the BCS is the most recognized ranking this time of year, but WVU was #1 in the coaches poll. I think its fair to say they just beat the [former] #1 team in the country.

Comment by B.B. 12.02.07 @ 12:05 am

Great point there Jon C

Comment by Dennis 12.02.07 @ 12:05 am

One other thing, if you do watch the RR press conference, his eyes do roll up into his head because he can hear the panthers roaring in the backround…It like someone is stabbing him with a red hot poker…Oh yeah, someone did…Rock on DW…I laughed out loud!

Comment by HbgFrank 12.02.07 @ 12:07 am

Here’s the deal… Pittsburgh is 5-7 and isn’t going anywhere. They’re less than medicore. West Virginia is good but not great… they’ll go to a good bowl, but not for the national championship. Great teams figure out a way to beat a 4-7 team. West Virginia didn’t get the job done, so they don’t deserve to play for the national championship. If they played Pittsburgh 10 times, they’d win seven of them, but they didn’t want it bad enough on this one. The fact is that Pitt is 5-7. Period. End of debate. They will go to NO BOWL and end up where they need to be… home during the New Year’s bowl season. You can say all you want to, but that is a fact. Read it and weep Pissburger.

Comment by RIB 12.02.07 @ 12:10 am

I’ve watched the last 1.34 over and over…

I’m crying…fucking crying…and it hasn’t even sunk in yet.

Waht a fucking game.

I could care less who backdoored a national championship - as i said before, as long as WVU (And PSU) aren’t playing for a national championship, i’m fucking estatic.

Now all the bitches are doing 180s rambling about Pitt this and Pitt that…fuck you, you didn’t believe…we finally put togehter one of those games, the games we knew we were capable of - where the most talented team, athlete and coaches were able to accomplish what was ours, against all odds.

Who says Wannstedt shouldn’t get an extension now?

I said if we won this game and went 1-11, i’d be fucking happy. Look it up. Its in writing.

I’m happy.

RIB: eat a dick.

Comment by Stuart 12.02.07 @ 12:12 am

RIB, let me repeat exactly what I wrote in the first paragraph up there:

“It means absolutely nothing to the 2007 season but in the long run it looks great for recruiting, it was against our biggest rival, and it was against the #2 team in the nation. Also gives a ton of positive feelings going into next year.”

No shit we’re 5-7, this season has been lost for over a month. This is about the future…

Comment by Dennis 12.02.07 @ 12:17 am

No bowl game…who cares. Nothing but a national championship game could top this.(that’s gotta hurt) This was better then any bowl game Pitt has been in since I was born. Bonus:Rodriguez is near tears on ESPN.

Comment by Sunshine 12.02.07 @ 12:17 am

I can’t remember the last tim e wvu was held to 7 points and i’m too drunk to look uit up…but i will tomorrow….

Comment by Stuart 12.02.07 @ 12:20 am

I was at the 36-35 comeback game Unbelievably drunk at the end-all thers was to do in fidrt half was drink and mourn), I was in Morgantown for the game PITT won without Dan Marino (dated a Hoopie, she was real cute), but this game is the sweetest. DW has a team that may be loaded next year with all the redshirts.
LET’S GO PITT JPK Class of 1976

Comment by Jim 12.02.07 @ 12:22 am

Comment by Joe Pa's gay lover 12.02.07 @ 12:22 am

RIB…you are not getting it bro…what’s more satisfying…going to the a BCS bowl and beating the number 8 team in the country that is just something to watch until the BCS championship game comes on; or, beating your top rival, on their home field, when they were favored by 28 points, and knocking them out of the BCS title game?…Go cry in your moonshine bro, you just got your ass whooped by that 5 and 7 team!!! HA!HA!

Comment by HbgFrank 12.02.07 @ 12:23 am

We just beat the number 1 team in the country on their field. I’m goin to Disney World.

Comment by TexasPanther 12.02.07 @ 12:24 am

Comment by Stuart 12.02.07 @ 12:41 am

PSS. It wasn’t Lou Holtz’ “pep talk” as much as it was them seeing that Mark May in his old Pitt jersey and realizing that, despite his calm on-air demeanour, Mark possessed the guns and the prowess to rip every one of their heads off if they lost that game in a fit of blind rage.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 12.02.07 @ 12:45 am

btw i’m getting season tickets next year….and predicting 10 wins. Quote it. i’ll even sit in the miserable cold and rain.

i can’t wait to get to the first game next year…it can’t come soon enough…i want to satnd on my seat screaming, the loudest fan in heinz field, thanking them for what they did this year.

I hope they have a ceremony at one of the upcoming basketball games. i’m so fucking pround of these guys…even Murray and Strong. Why couldn’t you be like this all year? Oh well, all is forgiven. Thank you Rhoads….

I have not read the other posts yet and I’ve been drinking all the way back from Morggantown BUT WOW was that great..I was at Notre Dame when Palko pulled out the win and at old Pitt stadium when Harris beat Miami on a Thursday night..also at the WVU 31-31 tie in 89…not to mention a bunch of other memorable Pitt game…

but I think this is the sweetest win of all…going to watch on the dvr right now.

I have never heard 56,000+ so quiet leaving Puskar stadium tonight. And shame to all the Pitt fans who sold their tickets tonight…I doubt the number of Pitt fans in the Pitt section were over 1000…we were out numbered 3 to 1 in the vistors section!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment by Stuart 12.02.07 @ 1:05 am

GREAT… I said, “GREAT” Win…i was a freshman in the stands of the 36-35 win, which was amazing (and we did it the next year, when we beat Navy 36-35, after being down 35-10 at half)….this was an emotional win, and a few thoughts:

1. Good D, aggressive bliting (which as i’ve said is like a press in basketball–it disrupts the other team, and forces mistakes or hurried up play).

2. Solid tackling. McKillop’s tackle on 4th and 3 at the 22 was H U G E.

3. Cavanaugh called a good game—the long pass (even though it was intercepted) to open the game was okay–kept the wvu d honest, and our O made few mistakes—Matt kept calling Shady’s number and he delivered.

4. Wanny was passionate, and so was the team…passion works!!!

Hail to PITT!

Oregon Al,

Did I just hear you on Panther Hotline?

Comment by ME2001 12.02.07 @ 1:09 am

Lieterally, this was the most brilliant coaching job i’ve ever seen, just looking at schematics. And we made tackles when we were there. Our offense did nothing - hell, we ran for 148 yds when they KNEW we were going to run it - and we still won. Absolutely brilliant.

Comment by Stuart 12.02.07 @ 1:10 am

Ok,read the other posts now..Stuart you said it best…I could care less it we had won any other game thei year or any bowl game..nothing could top this win….it was priceless walking out at that stadium tonight…countless people muttering ‘I don’t f###ing believe this’ with cries of ‘LET’S GO PITT….LET’S GO PITT’ in the background.

Please do not compare my beloved Panthers to Appalachian State ever again. Additionally, next year you better not act surprised when Pitt is favored over the Mountainqueers….
Sincerely,
Gofuck Yourself…..

Comment by Sunshine 12.02.07 @ 2:21 am

This is still fucking surreal.

I’ve had Ohio State homers actually coming up to me all night, high fiving me because of the Pitt things I’m wearing. These are people who, in 12 hours, will be calling me derrogatory terms for homosexuals because I’ll be wearing black & gold instead of blue and gold. Unreal.

It’s strange, of everything that happened tonight, the moment that sticks out most for me is Scott McKillop’s tackle on 4th and 3 late in the 4th. I swear to god that guy teleported or something in order to make that play.

This year has been one of the most frustrating I’ve ever had to endure in my life as a diehard Pitt fan, but god does tonight make it so worthwhile.

Herbstreit looked like he was about to cry on the sportscenter bit, and all he could manage to say was “Pitt wanted it more.”

Damn right. This is why you will never find a true rivalry in any American sport other than college sports.

also, you will never be able to convince me that the fix wasnt in on this game. how many bullshit calls went against us at the end of the game when wvu needed them? the touchdown holding call, the first down holding call, the next play and non-pass interference, the excessive celebration. i was on the phone with a ref who never badmouths his own, but even he said they were BS. if wanny doesnt lay into those refs he’s a better man than i am. Where the hell is that passion from the students for every other game we play?

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 12.02.07 @ 3:49 am

I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT WHOLE GAME. WE HAD PAT WHITE SO CONFUSED HE DIDNT KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON. Our Defense was the best defense in the country tonight. I , the greatest critic of Paul Rhoads ever, wanted to kiss his feet tonight. His defense was unbelievable. Pat White is lucky he got injured because the d was raping him up and down the field.
That said.
The refs were absolutely HORRIBLE. It was all from one ref too. (I didnt get a chance to see if he was toothless) If we are smart WVU would have been held to maybe 3 if Mac could kick one field goal. (duhart ruined that on his damn unsportsmanlike)
Shady! congrats… You had the most amazing year.

Offense struggled, but to see our defense play that well against anyone let alone WVU makes me unbelievably happy.

Comment by Adam 12.02.07 @ 4:37 am

The ref was the same guy that let UConn return a fair caught punt for a TD I believe. At least it was the same crew.

Was it the same ref who made the call in the Pitt v. Rutgers game?

A lot of shitty officiating has gone on in the Big East this year, and everytime that one older skinny-looking ref is involved.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 12.02.07 @ 4:53 am

Scott Mckillop was a MAN…. What a hell of a player. This guy has no quit!
I’d give gameballs to the whole defense, but Jamel Brady and Scott Mckillop deserve it tonight.
Brady, who has been average at best, played amazing football! Mckillop was his normal self, and noone is beating that!

Mccoy on offense gets a gameball

Anyone notice how Pitt put their d-ends in a contain package and forced White inside. Great Move, and Clermond especially did a great job there.

Pat White was a non-factor!
Kirk Herbstreit is an idiot… If it is the most arrogant announcer. His sources are most likely telling him that that game was a huge upset, and his sources are always right.

Coming in, our bus got hit with a rock and LeSean McCoy stood up and said, ‘Hey, it’s just like in the movies.’ This game will be the first one our team watches next season.”

Number one win was the sugar Bowl for the National championship. That has to rate 1st this is second.

As I posted earlier last night they are now known as the Choakeneeers

Comment by TMGPanther 12.02.07 @ 7:28 am

It is obvious that Pitt won in spite of Wannstedt and all of the coaches (except those who we like). Dave had a blank look the entire time and was not active in the game. Additionally, we need a new stadium in Oakland. We also won because Dave was in the pressbox and not on the field.

Comment by Joey D 12.02.07 @ 8:51 am

Obviously, a great win. The team played well and didn’t give up when bad stuff happened (penalties) like in past years. It is amazing what happens when players make tackles without needing 8 other people to help 15 yards down the field.

The defense won the game and the offense did what it had to do in order to not lose it. Bostick looked like a true freshman but held it together. Who knows if Turner was holding. Darrell Strong now has one play on tape from college to show NFL coaches. McCoy was very good.

Steve Slaton must have had sex with Rodriguez’s wife or something because he went from All-American last year to 9 yards or so against Pitt and a mediocre overall season for him.

And lastly, a great win for beating WVU at WVU and destroying their hopes at a national title. Now I will sit back and watch the Randy Quaid from Major League II that hated the coaching staff come on here and say “I always knew they could do it”.

Comment by Joey D 12.02.07 @ 9:07 am

Joey D - the WVU football board on Scouts is just pillorying Slayton. It part they say the he’s been worrying too much about what draft choice he’ll be and playing not to get hurt this season.

Personally, I think RR lost this game with his not insisting Slayton and Devine get more carries. All season long our Achilles Heel has been the long rushing play for a TD and he took that out of the equation.

That and RR’s complete inability to get his team ready to play - even after it was apparent at halftime they were in a dog fight. Compare the attitudes of the two teams in the third quarter and it’s obvious WVU checked out emotionally after White went down. Brown, I thought, did OK as his replacement - but the WVU players couldn’t buy into it.

Stuart - if you’re reading this, its 10:00 am and time to go to bed. Put the bottle down, put your PITT pajamas on, and get a good night’s sleep. Dream about how bad the Hoopies feel right now - they’ll be just as hungover, without a win to celebrate. We need your sterling wit starting this afternoon.

Comment by Reed 12.02.07 @ 10:06 am

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! I’ll never forget the looks on their faces- what a VICTORY. THAT’S 60-37-3 now. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve never been prouder to be a PITT fan. Like I said yesterday, all the negative shit (from our so-called fans no less) was killing me. I am so damn proud of our players, AND OUR COACHES. Even in the face of what actually may have been a conspiracy to push WVU into the national championship, PITT pulled it off. WVU is just lucky those bullshit calls saved them some face. PITT flat out kicked WVU’s ASS. They’re lucky they didn’t lose by 3 touchdowns. Thanks for the memories WVU!!!! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

HAIL TO PITT!

Comment by Dan35 12.02.07 @ 10:20 am

I am loving this. I’ve watched the sportscenter hilights about 50 times…cant get enough.

I wanted to take a minute out of our celebration to thank the BE officials for screwing us for the better part of the year. Thanks to their fixed calls they probably cost our players and university a bowl trip. Imagine if they dont screw us against Rutgers, we are 6-6 with a win over #2 - we most likely go to a bowl.

So thank you refs for taking that away from our players, coaches, alumni, fans, city, and especially our senior players who (most) will never play in another football game in their lives. You not only cost our players a game they earned but what about the millions of dollars you cost the school? There needs to be a serious review of BE officiating, it sure looked suspicious.

Keep crying Rich, way to be a class act and not even so much as tip your hat to the panthers. We witnessed a monumental win last night, panther nation should celebrate. The Steve Pederson II ear has begun.

The symbolism of RR’s press conference has left me speechless. The pain in his face… He couldn’t even keep his composure. And to hear the Pitt players whooping it up in the background while RR struggles to find words… That image is something I’ll never forget. Great game. And finally some vindication for the Stache and the coaching staff.

Stuart,

Sorry about the hangover. You can keep your soul for being so animated.

To Pitt Blather posters….wow..something like 500 + postings on the game and aftermath….did the server melt down ? Game Grades:

QB: Bostick B -…for a true freshman on the road in front of 60K + hostile fans..not fleet of foot and with a slow pass release….he did good once he settled down…especially as the game wore on…it’s that confidence thingy…..

RB: A ++ On a big stage…what a time for our guys to shine….they looked fast and determined

WR: C…yep a C….could do more to help Bostick out….but did the job when they had to..yes they were open a couple of times….and the holding penalties on Turner were suspect at best

TE: B…only for that great grab to keep the drive alive…Strong has all the tools to be a dominate TE…does he have the desire and drive to consistently leave it all on the field? Still that grab was a big time

O Line: B + Early on…same ol same ol..mistakes and porous pass protection….as the game progressed…found themselves with the run game….and by the end of the game…WVU was finished….they were

Special Teams: B +…Missed FG, a couple long returns allowed by WVU….but also a brilliant fake punt, forced Turnover….

D Line: A +…penetrating, disrupting, holding QB containment…a completely different unit from a week ago..

LB: A +…Ditto from above comments….blitzing and tackling best I’ve seen in a long long time from Pitt

Secondary: B Some excellent pressure with blitzes….a couple completions allowed….but also some very good step-for-step coverage…

Coaching: Offense: B+…I got to give kudos to Cav…recognizing Pitt’s limitations…he kept us out of trouble early in the game…but did try to vertically stretch WVU with a couple of long calls….Cav allowed the O to settle down…get their bearings and through the power run game…take control of the game…and if anybody doesn’t think Pitt had control in the 2nd half….they didn’t watch the game

D: A +++ PR….did somebody implant PR’s brain with a micro chip controlled by Dick Lebeau or Buddy Ryan ? Excellent game plan…..excellent tackling, most excellent pressure and contain….far and above anything Pitt has managed in 10 years or more…

Wanny: A-…yeah he did it….showed those bastards he can pull it together…..got some work still on Offense game management….but is the D the shape of things to come ?….let’s hope so….and I hate to admit…this game and Pitt’s performance is exactly the vision Wanny has espoused for 3 years….tough D, and grind it out Offense…with Stull or any experienced competent QB…or a Bostick with a year or more under his belt….guys…. this game isn’t even close….

Officiating: F-…is the BE officiating linked to television revenues and ranking of teams involved ? it’s hard not to believe it after watching this game….BE refs consistently the worst in the college game….BE commisioner needs to clean this mess up…..SEC automatically reviews every play….BE needs to institute that program…clean this mess up…just not for Pitt’s sake…but the conference as whole….

Overy long post….but thanks for the site this year…and can’t wait for next year’s FB season

Anyone who was in the visitor section of Mountaineer Field last night as time expired in the 100th Backyard Brawl knows that the tradition of Pitt football is alive and well. There may not have been a lot of us Pitt fans there, but when the victorious Panthers came to tne endzone and fist-pumped their helmets in the air while singing the Pitt fight song with the fans…

Hail to Pitt

The best moment of the game for me was at the end of the 3rd quarter. Did you see our defense SPRINT down to the other end of the field? When WVU saw the fire we had they knew the game was over.

I have been preaching on this BLOG to who ever would listen that DW is building a solid program. I beleive tonight alot of people saw the light.

Now it is time to piggyback off this HUGE WIN and get these recruits to committ. Message to the FOLLOWING:

PS- I love DW’s interview- 3 years ago I said we needed to run faster; tonight we RAN FASTER.

HAIL TO PITT

Deter, good post. i would upgrade TE to B+ due to their run blocking support. Otherwise I’m in complete agreement.

Comment by TMGPanther 12.02.07 @ 4:46 pm

Good call TMG — and bonus points to Strong since he was the only real TE that dressed last night (Byham and Pelusi out with injury) so he had some added pressure on him.

I never enjoyed a victory more than I enjoyed this one!

For the record, im from west virginia ( i do have all my teeth, AND a couch ready to be burned in my backyard) and i do NOT believe we lost because our QB dislocated his own thumb.

i dont think either team played well offensively, defensively i thought they both looked good.

my only problem with pitt fans is win or lose, the insults that are hurled at us arent about football. they’re about being inbred, toothless, hillbillies with nothing better to do than burn couches, sleep with our cousins, and drink moonshine. what does that have to do with anything? i dont mind listening to people talk about how shitty the game was, because its true. but i dont understand why we have to be stereotyped as some fictional hick. the ones you see at the games who look like that, are doing it as a joke, sadly most other people think its for real.

and i dont understand how insulting our coach being emotional makes a strong case for your team or your fans. he just lost out on taking his team, who had worked so hard all season, so the championship. west virginia football isnt about being a big name or a national powerhouse (like osu, usc, est), its about heart and spirit and hard work and being proud of yourself no matter what happens. and when you have people shitting on you all the time, and you work so hard, against all people adversity (and you have admit, we get a lot of it) and have something SO CLOSE, and then just give it away, its emotional. and i commend him for expressing how he really felt.

so someone please explain to me (civilly, im not here to start an arguement or piss people off or to be referred to as an ignorant hick, although judging by some other comments on here i probably will be) how insulting us and saying ignorant things about us that really arent true, have anything to do with football, or with this game.

and as for the old man, i had 2 pitt fans get in my face and throw their beer all over me at heinz field for the game last year. surprisingly enough, one was wearing camo overalls spitting tobacco, and the other looked like someone you’d expect to see in west virginia. so you’re not alone
