An Irresponsible Action

I don’t have an excuse. Posting, even in speculation, about why Pat Bostick went home was just wrong, regardless of my intent.

Of course, that isn’t really good enough. I owe an explanation of how I got to that point.

When I saw the articles and the statement from Coach Wannstedt about Pat Bostick leaving for a while, I focused on the last sentence:

“No timetable has been set for his return. we are leaving that judgment to Pat and intend to do everything we can to be supportive of him and his family.”

I took that to mean it was a legitimate family/personal issue.

I was also curious as to what it was. I went to the Lancaster newspaper to see if there was anything happening and saw the article. Being from the Lebanon area (about 15 miles away), I know Lititz does not have a particularly large population and a simple white pages search yielded a single “Bostick.” The two things mean nothing. It did make me wonder and worry some more.

Worry enough, that I went to the message boards to see if there was anything else out there. I started reading the worry and speculation that Bostick was leaving the program for whatever reason. Oh, woe unto Pitt. Why do these things keep happening to “us?” And I got pissed.

Pissed that other Pitt fans were flying off the handle and apparently ready to turn on the kid without another thought. Pissed at an overreaction. Pissed because I thought I knew better.

The smart thing would have been to just walk away from the keyboard for a while. Cool down. Do something else.

Instead I stupidly added my own speculation. I did it because in that space of time, I presumed myself to be some sort of superior fan. I made one of the biggest mistake a fan can do — see himself as some sort of representative of the team and/or “true fans.” Some sort of protector of the interests of the team and players. That’s when fans do the stupid crap that gives fandom a bad name. It’s not being biased that gets fans in trouble. It’s when the fans think they are part of the team or representing them directly.

I knew shortly after I posted it, that I shouldn’t have. I knew better, and I still screwed up. Regardless of my intent, I was wrong. I’m not going to delete or edit out what I wrote. Scrubbing a post doesn’t change it, and I have to own my mistake. All I’m going to do is add a link to this post.

I’m sorry. I’m sorry to Pat Bostick and Bostick family for publishing my own speculation about what is a private and personal issue. I’m sorry to Pitt and Pitt Athletic Department for pretending to be some sort of rep. And I’m sorry to everyone who reads this for crossing the line.

You have nothing to apologize for. You are a blogger … you were blogging. So what that you speculated … we all were.

Comment by Billy 08.07.07 @ 5:44 pm

I didn’t think there was anything really irresponsible about the post. It was clear – at least to me – that you were just putting forth an admittedly wild guess as to why he left.

I just heard on Mark Madden that he left because of “panic attacks”. UGH.

Comment by Dan35 08.07.07 @ 5:49 pm

I dont know if it is worth an apology or not, but the apology was a well written and sincere one for sure. I agree we all get so wrapped up with our team, that when something happens like this we basically become obsessed. This is the same thing that happened with the “rumor.” I think we should all agree that being a PITT fan can be very frustrating at times, especially because we all love PITT so much. This often makes us irrational (in my case flying off the handle during games), and most of us can sympathize. Keep up the blogging, i appreciate it.

Comment by cabe 08.07.07 @ 5:49 pm

Yeah, I agree with Billy. Chas, think about it… I’m sure we’ve all received phone calls from friends who have seen something in the paper and called to make sure we weren’t involved, etc… this sort of speculation isn’t unique or problematic among “fans” or bloggers. If anything, it’s a very common reaction from many types of people, so no apology needed.

Comment by Greg in Columbia 08.07.07 @ 5:53 pm

Mark Madden makes me roll.

Comment by ChrisA 08.07.07 @ 5:54 pm

You should be sorry. Take your blog down.

That is the least you could do. One more thing: I know the family, due to living in that area. And, they read all of these sites, and they read your site.
Just please go away.

Comment by steve 08.07.07 @ 6:25 pm

WGAL is reporting that Pat should return by this weekend. The sports anchor claims he talked with his father on the phone.

Comment by Eric R 08.07.07 @ 6:31 pm

Well, you didn’t need to apologize. Anyone looking at newspapers and reporting looks for connections – should you have posted as quickly as you did? perhaps not, but wild speculation happens – you just happen to have a larger raedership than most.

That said, Steve is just being silly at this point. Being slightly angry that someone speculated and it could have effected another family is one thing – calling for a blog to be taken down due to it – well, you’d have to take down every piece of media to stop that kind of speculation, from CNN on down.

Comment by Tom 08.07.07 @ 6:45 pm

Jeez. I mean, no offense to Chas or anything but this isn’t the New York Times. This is a Blog and he said he was speculating when he posted what he said. Admittedly it was WILD speculation but he didn’t say anything disparaging about Bostick. If anything Chas was coming to his defense. Some of you guys have got to chill out.

Comment by frankinchicago 08.07.07 @ 6:45 pm

dickbag – “You are truly an idiot.. I am done reading your blog…who is with me?”

TAKE YOUR OWN FUCKING ADVICE. YOU’RE STILL READING IT. SHUT THE FUCK UP, AND LEAVE ALREADY.

“Just please go away.”

Oh, the fucking irony. go here http://www.blackshoediaries.com

I’m sure they’ll welcome you and your senseless ramblings. I’m sure I speak for the great majority here when i say shut the fuck up, stop posting, and leave. Please. You’re just being a troll and beating a dead horse.

Comment by Stuart 08.07.07 @ 6:50 pm

steve,

We will all miss you, really. Chas, you really should refund Steve’s money. Oh wait, everyone enjoys this site for free. If you don’t like it, don’t visit it, no one gives a shi*.

Thanks for the site, Chas and Dennis. Those of us far away from Pgh really appreciate it.

Comment by Jon C 08.07.07 @ 6:51 pm

There is no double fact checking here… its a blog. Thats why you don’t get yesterdays news tomorrow like you do in all those printed publications that have to review everthing for 100% accuracy. Here, if 95% of the speculation is wrong, at least i knew 5% of the info 2 days before it was “released” in a worthless paper.

Otherwise i’d go get all my pitt info from http://pittsburghpanthers.cstv.com and espn.go.com

I didn’t even think an apology is necessary, but if it made him feel better, so be it. Now all you trolls go back to your farms in crappy valley.

Comment by Stuart 08.07.07 @ 6:54 pm

I still want to know the real reason he went home.

Looks like our QB is going to be named Billy.

(oh shit! speculation! get the shovels and pitchforks out!)

Comment by Stuart 08.07.07 @ 6:58 pm

And now that i go over to that other site and read for a minute, they’re right back on the “pitt should play 3 here for 2 there” beat the deadhorse bullshit again…. Is that the only thing they can write about?

Comment by Stuart 08.07.07 @ 7:03 pm

Steve,

I am guessing Steve is gay.

Comment by Smallz 08.07.07 @ 7:06 pm

Can anyone confirm that WGAL reported that PB will be back? Eric, what else was said? Did you hear it yourself?

Thanks

Comment by Smallz 08.07.07 @ 7:17 pm

Steve,

I have to agree with a couple of post’s. If you are leaving then why are you still posting. Chas explained his side, enough for me! It’s a free world. If you don’t like this post, then go somewhere else.

I hope PAT is OK and returns soon!

Comment by winedogs 08.07.07 @ 7:46 pm

If it is panic attacks, it makes sense and I don’t blame him. Remember, this was the guy who was so excited to become a Panther (and a leader), that he made sure that his LOI was the first received for his class. To me this just shows that this kid is passionate, and excited to get on the field and play. Unfortunately, sometimes when we are young, we let our excitement get the best of us. There is nothing wrong with it. It is part of growing up, which we often forget is what these kids are doing on a national stage. I am sure that Pat will come back from this and do great things for PITT. Someday, he may forget that this ever happened. We can all help make that happen, by not making this a huge deal of it.
Looking forward to having you back Pat.

Comment by PantherSig 08.07.07 @ 8:14 pm

Well said. It isnt that he owes anybody an apology, but the fact that this is a very credible blog. That is what Chas prides himself on. This is the only instance I can remember in the almost 4 years of being a reader.

Like I said in the last thread, keep your head up and keep up the good work. You put a lot of your time into this blog and you don’t see any reward. I have never shown my appriciation before, but I will be donating a case of beer to the tailgate fund.

Comment by Scott 08.07.07 @ 8:34 pm

Just relax. You apologized, it was clearly heartfelt. Sometimes you post stuff and you maybe should have thought a bit more about it, but you know, you have a life. You can’t be thinking about this all day and night. You obviously don’t feel good about it. You obviously do actually care that Bostick is alright as is his family. People make mistakes. It was uncharacteristic. That’s the key. Otherwise you’d be apologizing all the time. You aren’t, all is well, we all support Pat Bostick and his family, but selfishly, we hope he returns soon and becomes the stud we think he is. That is selfish, but it’s honestly.

Comment by Ryan 08.07.07 @ 8:59 pm

It was well written, Chas. I personally was not offended but it was good that you apologized to the Bostick family. As for people saying that they will stop reading, that’s ridiculous. I find myself on certain days that I read this blog more than the paper so I appreciate your effort and dedication. With that said I hope The Bostick Family is OK and that any trouble that they go through is met with comfort in the end.

Comment by Panthoor 08.07.07 @ 9:08 pm

That apology was a genuinely classy act, poster. The truth is, you were just typing what we were all thinking.

Praying for Pat, whatever the scenario is.

Comment by Kyle 08.07.07 @ 9:11 pm

I don’t even see the need to apologize. Maybe it was a silly thing to speculate about, but who cares? It’s your blog; you can post whatever you want.

And as for professionalism: IT’S A BLOG! There are no professional standards!

Comment by Jeff 08.07.07 @ 9:55 pm

Chas–nice apology…I know it’s hard not to speculate, but You came through classy at the end.

To the Bostick family—my support and heartfelt best wishes go to you, no matter what the reason. Pat is a sterling young man, and I wish him the best in all he does.

From out here in Oregon, my best to PITT people and fans!

Hail to PITT,

Comment by al 08.07.07 @ 10:11 pm

Hey! Lighten up. This post was no huge deal. We are all exasperated and trying to figure it out. This is a blog and discussion. Who can blame anyone for that? And we are all stressing over the Panthers getting off on their best foot. Pat Bostic needs to do whatever he needs to do, and my guess is he is a serious football payer inside, and he will get things ironed out and be back, and be just as good as we ever hoped.

I had A-Fib for years and it was hell to deal with. But I made it OK after I figured out it would not kill me.

We can only speculate what goes on, even if they tell us, unless we had all the same issues and none of us has (walked in those same shoes).

Lets leave this and focus on camp for now. Maybe, if it turns out Bostic takes a RS year, it would just be normal, and best for all, and might be the best thing for all. There i go speculating…

Comment by Steve 08.07.07 @ 10:18 pm

Panic attacks? Are you serious? This kid is supposed to be a leader and start as a freshman. Don’t think I want him on the field in crunch time. He can’t even control his nerves before the start of training camp. What a disappointing turn of events. I, for one, won’t forget about this for quite some time and I’m sure his teamates won’t either. Way to get off on the right foot.

Comment by Omar 08.07.07 @ 10:52 pm

If Pat does leave, does Pryor gain more interest in Pitt?

Comment by makeditkathelogo 08.07.07 @ 11:09 pm

Omar, panic attacks aren’t necessarily something one can control just by bucking up, as I’m sure you would put it. You sound like the dad from That 70’s Show.
Chas, nice apology, but I think you are little too close to the subject. I personally wasn’t offended in the least about your speculation, and I think you’ve over-reacted a bit with the apology. That said, I really enjoy your blog.

Comment by crackbaldo 08.07.07 @ 11:17 pm

Ditto. If I see no reason to apologize for past statements posted here like “Society will be better when Joe Paterno is dead,” then you certainly don’t. :’)

Comment by geeman2001 08.07.07 @ 11:22 pm

Omar,

Panic attacks are a serious medical condition — it is unfair to play it off like it’s just nerves. I can tell you from experience, though, that panic attacks can easily be treated and controlled and in no way will they disable someone from coming through in pressure situations. We should not prejudge Bostick because of this medical condition — I guarentee you he will meet all expectations placed upon him regardless of what happens this week. And if he and his family read this blog as many have mentioned today, we should wish him well and hope for a speedy return to the team where his teamates will welcome him back with open arms – and the rest of the PITT family should as well.

Comment by JohnfromDC 08.07.07 @ 11:23 pm

Omar,

Mark Madden said on his radio show today that he heard from a “Pitt insider” of his that Bostick was having panic attacks. Easy to throw something like that out there because 1) it’s difficult to refute and 2) the coaching staff will never confirm it to the public. Madden’s rumor was almost negated by ESPN Radio’s Joe Destio on Madden’s program when Destio reported that Wannstedt addressed the Bostick situation later this afternoon. While I can’t remember exactly how Destio put it, he did mention that Wannstedt made it a point to say that it wasn’t a matter related to his family, nor was it really a “football issue”. He also told Destio he was very optimistic that Bostick will be back. Not sure what that all means, but I’m not sure it was anything related to his performance on the field or his projected playing time, as so many were willing to allude right away on the afternoon talk show circuit today.

Hence, taking something like this “panic attack” rumor as truth at this point is jumping to conclusions just a bit too early, yes?

I’m not sure why he went home, but let’s allow the situation to bear itself out before attacking the character of this kid, eh? Bostick was an early verbal, one of the first players to turn in his signed LOI, one of the kids who enrolled in classes in late spring-early summer so he could get here early and one of the recruits who spoke glowingly and excitedly of the school every time he was asked. I’m sure everything will work out fine for Bostick and for the program.

Comment by C.J. 08.07.07 @ 11:28 pm

Panic attacks are for little girls. I’m sure Joe Montana and John Elway, or Tyler Palko for that matter, had panic attacks before training camp. Did Brandin Knight have a panic attack before his first start as a freshman? I know I am being harsh, but come on, this is ridiculous. Don’t get me wrong, I hope he “recovers”, but this is a huge disappointment. I understand he is just a kid and we don’t even know if this is true, but if it is what can you say? Your quarterback of the future suffers from panic attacks. That doesn’t inspire confidence. If it is true, then this will follow him for the rest of his career. Every away game will surely have signs referring to his panic attacks. I’m sure his teamates will mention it as well. Pitt fans will definitely keep it in the back of their mind. Not a good start to one’s career, especially for a quarterback.

Comment by Omar 08.07.07 @ 11:29 pm

For Gawd’s sake, (1) it’s a 17 year old kid, one who wasn’t likely to play much this year, let alone start (and if he does, we’re in trouble) (2) everything reported has been irresponsible speculation, particularly the ‘legitimate’ media (Mark Madden has no more authenticity than Chas; perhaps far less, actually), and (3) if he returns, everybody here will love him the minute he throws a TD pass, let alone win a huge bowl game 3 or 4 years from now, regardless of what happened in the first day of his first camp.

I’m willing to bet hundreds, even thousands of kids in the past have done similar things; unfortunately, in this era when there are cameras everywhere and journalistic integrity ends when the 11:30 Cockran Showdown begins, everything is noticed and blown out of proportion.

Comment by geeman2001 08.07.07 @ 11:44 pm

Omar, cut the kid a break. I know that you are supposed to be headstrong as a college QB but he’s only, what? 18? 19 maybe?. The workouts must be sick this season and people are moving faster than he has seen so let’s wait and see what truly happened first before we give up on him. Again, Pat take your time and breath before you come back..I want him on the team but health comes first. Hopefully the worse case scenario is he redshirts if he needs some time…I hope we can do that.

Comment by Panthoor 08.07.07 @ 11:46 pm

So do we now have any chance with Terrell Pryor…?

Comment by Marco 08.07.07 @ 11:51 pm

[…] There’s no timeframe for his return. Some reports are that he might be returning next week (unfortunately nothing on the WGAL website at this time). Paul Zeise in his Q&A today suggests darkly that it might be quite a while. A big news day, but probably not a good news day, for Pitt as Pat Bostick, the heralded quarterback recruit from Manheim Township, has left camp for personal reasons and is not likely to return in the near future. […]

Omar – in this case you are ignorant of exactly what panic attacks are. They are not ‘nerves’ as you say.

You are way off base with this, and should shut up until you understand what people are talking about.

Comment by Reed 08.08.07 @ 8:26 am

Tony Soprano had panic attacks, and he murdered like 10 people on syndicated tv drama.

Seriously though, it’s a medical condition; not indicative of a lack guts/heart/poise, etc.

Comment by Jeff 08.08.07 @ 8:47 am

Omar, you really don’t know what you’re talking about. Panic attacks can be disabling and they have NOTHING to do with a lack of nerve. Just because Elway and Montana didn’t have them doesn’t mean that it for “little girls”. Grow up.

Comment by frankinchicago 08.08.07 @ 9:16 am

Gentlemen relax please. I acknowledged I was being harsh, especially with the little girl comment. Probably not the best thing to write. I apologize.

However, panic attacks may be disabling at first, but it is not a serious medical illness. Approximately 6 million adults suffer from panic attacks. The kid was right down the street from one of the best medical centers in the world. Why go home to get treatment? His parents can’t take a couple of days off to come spend with him? Let’s not make it out like the kid has Lou Gehrig’s or something. A panic attack is a routine medical illness and any 1st year resident physician can spot one.

The fact remains no fan can truly say they want their quarterback of the future to suffer from panic attacks. I hope the kid gets the treatment he needs, but this is a disappointing turn of events. We can be sympathetic to the kid and be disappointed at the same time.

I apologize if I offended any one and look forward Mr. Bostick returning to the Panthers.

Comment by Omar 08.08.07 @ 9:58 am

Omar – there’s a very real possibility that he had no idea at all that this would happen before it did. Sometimes a panic attack hits like a ton of bricks and the only ‘reasonable’ act is to remove oneself from the perceived source of the problem.

Anyway – you are right that it is disappointing in the football sense, and seems like just another in a long line of our continuing setbacks.

Comment by Reed 08.08.07 @ 12:12 pm

when one door closes, another opens, maybe billy stull plays within himself, helps us win a couple games, pat bostic comes in redshirts (which i thought would be most benificial from the beginning!) and behind possibly the best pitt offensive line in years takes us to a major bowl game. another possible path is with bostic out of the way terrelle pryor, realizing he would never sit from day one, would come in and do the same.

Comment by Kurt 08.08.07 @ 12:54 pm

Bostwick is so good that Pitt might just go 5-5 with him in the lineup.. I can understand Pitt fan’s overreaction.

Pretty good “quips” about West Virginia…and pretty unoriginal I might add. Face the facts pal, the glory days of Johnny Majors, Jackie Sherrill, and Foge Fazio are OVER buddy. Dorsett is gone pal. There’s no Danny boy back under center…and that ‘roid using NFL “bust-o-rama” Hugh Greene is long gone. By the way, the latter is THE most overrated player in college football history. WVU OWNS Pitt…and have for quite some time. Pornstache is an embarassment, and you’re stuck with him. Enjoy that “Pornstache 15 Year Plan” that been so successful in Chicago and Miami. This year’s game with Pitt is gonna be a beatdown of epic proportions. By the way, you ought to be smooching are WVU asses for collectively SAVING the Big East after the beatdown of Georgia in the Sugar Bowl a few years back. You welcome, you ungreatful piece of crap. Good thing for WVU that it rules, I guess, since grammar and spelling clearly aren’t its strong points. And it apparently likes a good rim job. Why come to us, did your sister turn you down again?

Comment by Brian of Brooklyn 08.09.07 @ 9:42 pm

Hey Stu…

What in the blue hell is up with the newest Pitt logo??? Looks more like a hyena to me. Is it part of “Pornstache’s 15 Year Plan” to change up logos every few years??? Man you guys are sorry…almost as sorry as your home schedule. Grambling? Navy? C’mon Stu.

Comment by WVU RULES 08.09.07 @ 10:45 pm

Gee Brian, so sorry for my grammar and incorrect spellings. You got me. Brian of Brooklyn? Wow, I feel so intimidated by your “gangsta” nickname and your attempt to humor us with a “sister joke” once again. Again, original. In all honesty, I’m guessing you’re a 50 Cent wannabe who’s actually a cross between Spike Lee and Woody Allen, but probably more like the latter. Also, I just bet with your reference to a “rim job”, you apparently wanna give me one. No thanks buddy. Save that crap for your boy Stu.

What amazes me is these rednecks facination with homosexuality…every other word is “fag” or “gay” or some “queer” comment…its almost like thats all they think about all day. Screaming comments like that on national TV makes your “school” look better too.

You go to a fucking prison which develops criminals – i’m not sure what is funnier – that you pay to get dumber, or that you inbred hicks are actually able to become any less intelligent. Keep bringing in criminals which beat strippers and try to kill people – your program is a fucking disgrace. Not that you’d notice, considering that what you’re surrounded by is worse.

I like how 2 years is a 15 year plan.

Good job in the NIT this year. Good luck gettin’ a job in the mine after you “gradamacate.” Unless you “done gradamacated already” – in that case, congratulations on the double-wide – i’m sure its nice.

Comment by Stuart 08.09.07 @ 11:28 pm

Stewy…

The only facination I have, is watching WVU literally pound Pitt on ESPN every year. That’s good stuff. I like how you PA idiots call us “rednecks” over and over. Again, original you Unoriginal Fuck. Do you realize PA is only about 10-15 miles from our border? Are the states really that much different? Of course, other than our state school is a perennial football powerhouse and yours is, well, a perennial joke, other than our highways are actually pretty clear of roadwork and huge potholes (something that hasn’t happend in PA since the Nixon era), and other than millions of opposing fans don’t say that our school “eats shit”.

Enjoy Pornstache there Stew…and the hilarious coaching job he’s doing. You’re 2 years into his 15 Year Plan you Blogtard.

In closing, I think I can speak for my WVU comrades here when I say that the “only double-wide” we’ve been “on” lately is your lovely sister mountain_man spoke so nice about previously. She certainly “chugs” the WV jizz down nicely Stew.

Comment by WVU RULES 08.10.07 @ 12:19 am

We talk about fucking Stewy’s sister and we get branded as homosexuals. That doesn’t say much about your sister my friend. The fact is, the only thing you have to say is how we are rednecks, we fuck sisters, blah blah blah. Criminal U? What did Pac Man and Chris Henry do while they attended our great football institution? Our program is a disgrace? That shows your ignorance of college sports. Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon…you should too. I look forward to reading your unoriginal jokes later on when you and Brian of Crooklyn crawl out of bed with each other. You fucking fagz. HEEEEHEEEE……….

Do your bosses know that you are trolling? I generally find government agencies aren’t wild about using their computers for personal stuff.

You are banned.

Penn State fans like me won’t stoop to the levels those WVU fans have fallen towards, making fun of sisters, etc. and bringing homosexuality into the debate. I figure Pitt’s football “program” is embarrassment enough to remind Pitt fans of.

I agree with the Pitt guys. I go to WVU and I am as queer as hell. I have fucked most of the football team on burning couches. My ass is as a mess from the pounding I have taken.

Wags,

Why are you posting on this site? I guess because you can’t go trolling on any U of Michigan blogs. Come back and post when you actually win a game against Michigan. Whoops… see you next decade… if ever…

As joyously heard in Ann Arbor on 9/22… AGAIN…

“We OWN…. Penn State!” and “You ARE… 0-8” (now nine)

Jo-Fer-9 ! … and still counting since 1996….
