Has anyone heard on how Palko is doing in Saints camp…I know its early

Comment by Rex 08.01.07 @ 3:53 pm

we’ll find out sunday night because he’ll probably get a majority of the play against the stillers.

Comment by Fcuk Paterno 08.01.07 @ 3:57 pm

Any information on number of season tickets sold this year?

Comment by Wolffie 08.01.07 @ 4:45 pm

I read:

“– PALKO HAS PAYTON’S EYE: In particular, Payton seems intrigued by Palko, a left-handed rookie out of Pittsburgh who was proficient in the short passing game during his college career.

“He’s had a lot thrown at him,” said Payton, who was credited with developing Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo during his stint as Bill Parcells’ offensive coordinator in Dallas. “I thought he did pretty well during the mini-camps. You look for good decision-making. I think when the live bullets start coming and he gets work, not only this weekend when we play Pittsburgh but the snaps for him, he can’t get enough of them. He’s got someone like Brees who he can study and see the little things he does well. He’s handled the installation well, but like any young quarterback, there is a lot going on in their minds and it’s moving pretty quickly. You just hope each practice he gets better.” ”

This is the most exciting part of the game this weekend – i can’t wait to watch.

And to answer the “season ticket numbers” question – not F’ing many at all. We’re screwed with the BEast schedule forever.

Comment by Stuart 08.01.07 @ 5:32 pm

So does anyone think that the defense (coaching aside) will show any *real* improvement over last year? Is there something I’m missing here? Do we have better/more experienced players at any position? Is this going to be another year of losing 45-44? Maybe our goal is improvement through dropping some dead weight…

After looking at this, I don’t think it’d hurt to push harder to get some recruits on defense…especially LB’s and DB’s…and you can never have enough lineman. Looking at the depth charts, our backups are soph or freshman at EVERY position…we don’t have any juniors backing up seniors…we need to get some continuity here…

Its great that we’ve increased our quality level on recruiting on offense (5 star qb’s and rb’s) but have we given up on the other side of the ball? I don’t see any 4* or above commits for next year…I know we got some last year, but we need to get some every year to get/keep this going…we need to close on some of these guys for next year.

Comment by Stuart 08.01.07 @ 6:52 pm

Yes, we’re screwed, but only every OTHER year.

Nordenberg and Long are like the Guiness cutout characters … only in this case clinking their “New Big East — Proud Member Forever” commemorative beer mugs together (comically missing them a few times first).

Brilliant!

Comment by geeman2001 08.01.07 @ 6:53 pm

If the DL is bigger, stronger (and healthier) the defensive will be much better. If it’s status quo there, we could possibly be even worse because of the inexperienced linebackers. But I was never sold on the greatness, or even goodness, of Blades and Session, though I definitely appreciated their efforts. The new guys, while not all pure LBs originally, were much more highly regarded recruits.

The DBs overall should be better, even without Fields, but again only if Thatcher and Phillips stay healthy, and if Cox is supplanted at CB (one can only hope) by one of the younger more talented guys. Revis was pretty much neutralized by smart coaches last year (another failure on Rhoads part not to use his best player more creatively), so his loss (impact-wise) won’t be as huge as some may think on the D. Or so I wishfully-think.

Pray that Morris had a transforming effect on the DL … that’s all I can say.

Comment by geeman2001 08.01.07 @ 7:06 pm

I took an even closer look at our remaining top D recruits next year, and there is 1 DE, 1 DT and 1 CB left that is above 3*… I think we need to land all 3 here, or we’re going to be in a poor position in the future. Until our D starts to catch up with the O we’re going to be in for some more pain.

Comment by Stuart 08.01.07 @ 7:19 pm

And we’re only healthier until our first game, its only a matter of time before an injury occurs (like every year) and then we’ll be back to playing a freshman or sophomore to start.

Comment by Stuart 08.01.07 @ 7:20 pm

you folks won’t believe this article…but someone at Scout.com picked Pitt to go 9-3 this year….I love Pitt, but how is this guy getting paid….?

check it out..

Comment by Marco 08.01.07 @ 7:28 pm

And even further looking I think we only have a chance at only 2 of these, neither listing us as the favorite…not looking good for any 4* or above defensive players coming in this year…

Comment by Stuart 08.01.07 @ 7:30 pm

well, we only have to win 2 road games against a rebuilding msu, and virginia. And as long as we don’t embarass ourselves at home, we’re golden…

I’m not going to say I agree with him though…with a new offense and our defense…if we win all our home games i’ll be happy.

The only thing that helps is that our 3 hardest games come at the end of the year, so maybe, just maybe, we’ll have some shit figured out by then and have a shot at taking down one of them…not *that* would be amazing.

Comment by Stuart 08.01.07 @ 7:37 pm

I meant “now *that* would be amazing.”

What I’m looking forward to is the year after…2008…a year older and more experienced, our good recruits getting older, stronger, and more experienced, and we get all 3 teams at home, and have the easier teams on the road…we could really put something together there… I think thats our first real shot at winning the big east in a while.

Comment by Stuart 08.01.07 @ 7:42 pm

I’d be shocked if our D was much better than last year. Good news is they can not possibly be worse, that is not an exaggeration. I just want a running game. That will be our best defense if we have one.

Comment by Jon C 08.01.07 @ 8:14 pm

9-3 is realistic at least. I’m not expecting it but if we can beat navy or south florida that at least means we should be 7-5. We surely have 8 beatable opponents on the schedule its just a matter of not stumbling along the way.

Comment by John 08.01.07 @ 8:47 pm

Every mag I’ve read has Virginia ranked 15-20 spots higher than the Panthers, don’t know what to make of it but certainly shouldn’t be the same walkover as the opener last year.

Comment by jason 08.01.07 @ 8:56 pm

YEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAA!!!! Can’t wait.

I think Pitt might shock some people, but 9-3 is a little crazy.

Comment by Dan35 08.01.07 @ 11:34 pm

If we finish 7-5 I would not complain…unless we started off 7-0, which is possible. Not to settle for a mediocre record but I hurt bad during Basketball and Football season(win or lose) so I’m taking baby steps. If we don’t head into East Lansing with a 2-0 record then it might be a long season.

8-4 is a successful season in my opinion since we don’t have a QB with some real experience…I think 1 college game and garbage time at that?. The Linebackers are who? Hale would have been a great pickup, someone tell this kid that he’s got a guaranteed spot unless he smokes la pipa. LB’s and Secondary is getting a severe overhaul, let’s hope Buddy and secondary coach Chris Ball torture the kids a little. Either way I can’t wait for Sept 1, crazy that it’s only a month away.

Comment by Panthoor 08.02.07 @ 1:42 am

Our running game is key. We don’t have Palko to drop back and pick up a 3rd and 10 after we don’t gain any yards running the ball the first 2 downs. If McCoy, Collier, Howling, etc. can establish themselves and have an avg yd/attempt greater than 2 yards (which is being generous based on last year), we’ll surpise a lot of people. If our offense is on the field, then obviously our defense isn’t. That’s the key to this year in my opinion.

Comment by Mark in Arlington 08.02.07 @ 8:52 am

It would be nice if we can hold teams to under 350 yards. It would also be nice if we could have a season of healthy players, they seem to drop like flies after the first game. Anyone else planning on attending the Pitt-UVA game? The DC alumni club is sponsoring a trip.

Comment by Rex 08.02.07 @ 10:54 am

I was planning on going to the UVA game, then I discovered it’s the day of the LSAT… of course.

i’m still considering on hauling it up there immediately after the test, though, if it’s a night game.

Comment by Greg in Columbia 08.02.07 @ 11:48 am

i’ll be at the UVA game

Comment by Fcuk Paterno 08.02.07 @ 12:26 pm

Dear Greg…go to the game…Law School is overrated….you can make more money starting your own business then being an attorney….besides UVA has some super hot chicks…

Comment by Marco 08.02.07 @ 12:52 pm

ha, thanks marco

when i think about uva im reminded of tucker max’s uva-horserace-party story… sundresses and booze, always seemed appealing…

Comment by Greg in Columbia 08.02.07 @ 1:32 pm

An earlier poster, Geeman2001 stated that one could only hope that Cox gets supplanted at cornerback. I strongly agree and have a suggestion. I recommend Larod Stevens-Howling. I attended the 2005 Big 33 game, in which Stevens- Howling was Pa’s MVP as a shutdown corner. He had a couple of picks, forced a fumble and made some great open field tackles. I was very impressed with his performance (he also caught a pass or two and returned some kicks). I was disappointed when Pitt decided to use him as a running back.

Pitt has some quality running backs…McCoy, Collier, Brooks, Collins, Hynoski. I think we can replace Stevens-Howling on offense, and he would be a significant upgrade to Cox at corner.

Comment by Al from Harrisburg 08.02.07 @ 2:51 pm

Al I think I have to agree. I think Larod would be excellent in coverage and get him back to returning kicks. He could still be used occasionally in the offense as a change of pace and gadget plays. Most people would say hes too small to play corner but look at another Johnstown High product Artrell Hawkins whos been in the NFL for almost a decade. Plus I just dont see where he fits in as a full time rb, its obvious DW wants to have a power running game and LaRod isnt durable enough to go through a full season of pounding the ball.

Comment by Rex 08.02.07 @ 3:48 pm

My family and I plan on going with a decent sized group of PITT fans to the UVA game. Can’t wait!! Im pumped!

Comment by Matt D 08.02.07 @ 3:52 pm

t cambell to edinboro. he should have run track.

Comment by alco fan 08.02.07 @ 4:01 pm

The other thing that worries me about all this running game talk is the fact that who you’re running behind is half the problem – look at edgerrin james last year.

Is our offensive line going to be any better? Are there even going to be any holes to run to? If we keep getting dominated up front with the inside running game I hope we have enough sense to at least try to take it outside, use some speed around the edge, spread the field instead of running into 7 or 8 in the box.

At best our “great recruits” under Wanny have 2 years college experience under them, and some only 1 – that hardly holds up to 5th year seniors other programs will be bringing (yes, not all, but some).

Not to throw this season under the bus already, and i hope to be suprised, but I’m still looking forward to 2008 more than anything.

A decade of this has caused me never to be optimistic or expect anything, and instead aim low and be suprised and excited when we overachieve.

Look at last year FCS – both teams had me believing (6-1 after 7 games, bball team #2 in the country at one point) and look how that turned out for me.

Comment by Stuart 08.02.07 @ 9:43 pm

Upon further review – between rutgers, lu, wvu, and pitt, pitt is tied for the least number of jr or sr defensive linemen and has the least number of jr or sr linebackers…

Suprisingly we have the most jr/sr offensive lineman out of the 4, with 10!. The funny part is almost half of them back up a underclass starter that was recruited by Wanny. WVU, lu and rutgers all have 7 or 8 o lineman that are jr/sr…and a lot of redshirted ones as well… I can’t wait for a few more years to pass before we don’t have freshman and sophomores on the line day in and day out…

Comment by Stuart 08.02.07 @ 10:35 pm

Stuart, maybe the lines won’t be a lot better than prior years, but the upgrade in talent gives me hope. Over the years, Pitt has had its share of good to great quarterbacks, running backs, receivers and defensive backs. But, from around 1985 through 2006, both lines have stunk (there have been some exceptions such as Ruben Brown). Pitt has mostly been a finesse team, especially under Walt Harris & Paul Hackett. Harris’ teams got most of their wins against overmatched non-conference opponents and then Big East weaklings Temple & Rutgers. Those opponents had even weaker lines, and Pitt would have enough playmakers to defeat that type of opponent. But whenever we went up against teams who played physical football, we usually got our asses kicked.

Finesse and creative playcalling are great, and coaches like Urban Meyer and Rich Rodriguez have developed great offensive machines built on finesse & deception. But these teams have also had superior line play. And that is the most important reason why they win 10+ games annually.

Buddy Morris first stint as Pitt’s strength & conditioning coach produced All-American linemen the likes of Mark May, Jimbo Covert, Bill Fralic, Mark Stepnoski,Jim Sweeney, Chris Doleman, Bill Maas and others. His second stint didn’t produce squat. Did Buddy become dumb all of a sudden or did he not have the talent to work with like he did the first time around? I believe the answer is a lack of talent.

I have seen the highs and lows of Pitt football. I have attended at least one Pitt game in each of the last 37 years, and have attended approximately 200 games altogether. We were 1-10 my freshman year and four years later, when I was in grad school at Pitt, we were national champs. It doesn’t get any better than that, and I truly hope that was not a once in a lifetime happening.

I unconditionally love & support Pitt football & basketball, win or lose. I am not busy at work in the fall, which is why I am able to attend so many games. Since I live in Harrisburg, every game I attend is a road trip. In addition to attending four or five home games annually, I usually attend several away games. Since 2000, I have attended games at Notre Dame, Boston College, WVU (twice), Syracuse (twice), U Conn, Temple, Louisville, Cincinnati, South Florida (Tampa) and the Tangerine (Orlando) & Tire (Charlotte) Bowls. The rides home are always shorter after a win, but I think I’ve probably seen more losses than wins over the years.

All of the lean years will just make the good years ahead even sweeter. I believe the upgrade in talent on the lines will start producing good results. The pathetic line play has clearly been Pitt’s major weakness these past 20+ years. I just hope Wannstadt, Cavanaugh & Rhoads will be able to coach up the talented atletes we are atracting. In my mind, that is the greatest uncertainty.

Sports are a great distraction. It gives us something to watch and talk and argue about. Otherwise, more of our energies would be expended on more unpleasant topics like the idiots in Washington or the assholes who run Penn State’s athletic department.

Comment by Al from Harrisburg 08.02.07 @ 11:18 pm

First of all, the offensive line is going to be really good. Pinkston is going to start at RT, which is an immediate upgrade as McGlynn is awful. Otah was solid last year and from what everyone is saying, has had as good an offseason as anyone. Joe Thomas should be great and I honestly believe Lumpy could start by week 3. He’s that good. CJ Davis is solid as well. We do lack a bit of depth, but we finally have talent.

DLine – it’s about injuries. If Malecki is heathy, he is great. Mick Williams may be our best lineman, but he’s never been healthy. I think Bokor is hugely talented. Super fast off the ball. If Jared Martin is healthy, that’s another ballplayer. Duhart needs to come in, get in shape, and start as a strong side Dend that can stuff the run. McKillop has supposedly gotten up to 270, which would help. Tony Tucker might be a player as a true. Point is that we have options, unlike last year when we had nothing.

Even at LB where we are unexperienced, behind our starters, we have Nix, Dell – who is a stud athlete – and others with some talent. Man, I wish Fields was eligible, but the talent level at Dback is still impressive. Aaron Berry is nasty. Cox will be fine. Gary and Chappel coudl be good. Lowell Robinson could play safety. Aaron Smith is a talent. Man, some of these guys are going to be good.

If the DLine can stop the run and our QB play is solid, man, we could be really good. I also don’t think you all realize how good McCoy is.

Comment by Ryan 08.03.07 @ 12:10 am

I understand McCoy is very good – but no matter how good you are, when you’re running into a box with 8 guys standing there not getting blocked, unless you are the greatest EVER, you’re not going very far.

So, whats our yds/carry goal for this year in the hard games (wvu, rutgers, lu)? Considering we rushed for -1 yds total (due to -40 in sacks) at WVU last year…i’m hoping for positive yardage. But i guess the key to that game is to holding them under 400 yds rushing…

And replacing the QB with the 4th best rating in the nation is going to be a question. No doubt we have the talent, but are they going to come in and take a while to understand it all and pull a Morelli? Will bill stull start, and then piss around for a few games before Bostick gets put in? Or the other way around?

This could be a great season, or a total disaster. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Comment by Stuart 08.03.07 @ 4:05 am

Defensively, I think the line will be better, only because I’m not sure they can be much worse than they’ve been the last few years. Malecki was pushing people around early last year, which isn’t bad considering he was a true freshman. When they got up against better competition, he had a tougher time, but again…true freshman. If Clermond is everything he’s supposed to be, both he and McKillop could form solid ends. I’m not sure about Duncan and Mustakas. A lot is also going to depend on where Romeus, Tucker, Duhart and Caragein fit in as well.

I’ve never been a huge fan of Mike Phillips, but he should help stabilize the safety position now that he’s fully healthy. Nice to have Thatcher back as Sam Bryant was just terrible last year. Really would’ve been nice to have Fields there as a fallback just in case. Corner is going to be shaky unless Kennard Cox improves by leaps and bounds. I think Berry could be a good one, but he’s inexperienced. Luckily, he’ll have two good games to get adjusted.

I’m excited to see what the LBs are going to be like. There will probably be some growing pains there, but McKillop could be solid in the middle. It’s going to be tough to replace Blades, but I can’t see how it could get any worse than what Session & Co. did last year. I think there’s some untapped talent and depth there with Nix, Dell (if he’s healthy), Gunn, etc.

Spoke to a co-worker (Pitt alum and season ticket holder) who has some family ties to the Pitt coaching staff earlier this week. He told me Dickerson has become an absolute monster under Morris’s tutelage…that he’s pushing close to 230-235 right now and is athletic beyond belief. We’ll see.

Comment by C.J. 08.03.07 @ 9:54 am

The offense should be halfway decent if the quarterback (whoever it may be) is just asked to manage the game and not do anything stupid trying to take the team on his shoulders before he is ready.

On defense, it would be nice to see an opponent tackled by the 1st, 2nd or 3rd Pitt player to flail an arm at them, instead of the usual 9 Pitt players it takes to tackle anyone. Also, I am hoping that Kennard Cox makes an attempt to cover a receiver this year. Granted, if you don’t have great speed and aren’t physical then you shouldn’t be at the line of scrimmage but Kennard would drop 15 yards and allow the underneath stuff all day, miss a tackle and then that was it.
