He’ll get another chance — next year.

Fields has been suspended for the football season for violating team policy, Panthers coach Dave Wannstedt announced Tuesday.

“Although we have suspended Elijah for the season, he will remain part of our program and practice,” Wannstedt said in a statement. “We will continue to demand that he work hard on the field and in the classroom so that he can be an important part of our program’s future.”

Of course, that depends on Fields actually showing up and working. Something that it seems he has shown little commitment to actually doing.

He has some incredible talent. He flashed it in the spring where he missed a series of practices, had a brief suspension and still looked phenomenal in the Blue-Gold game. He doesn’t seem to care about the rest — academics, practice, conditioning, the future.
This suspension has been rumored all summer. Heck, Orson at EDSBS was probably hinting at it earlier yesterday (item #6).

Pitt seems to be all they can to help the kid. If he doesn’t want the help and the opportunity, though, there’s not much to be done.

I’m guessing Safety becomes a bigger priority in recruiting at this point.

Some people you can never figure out. Fields is one of the very, very few Panthers, the coaches can say that if you get with the program, you will be signing an 8 figure contract when you leave Oakland. How much more motivation do you need? Has he never seen MTV”s Cribs show? What is his alternative? Go back to Duquesne and sell drugs on the corner? Minimum wage job?

What are the odds he transfers and sits out a year (considering he has to anyways)?

An all season suspension seems kinda harsh to me. What do you guys think?

It seems appropriate in the light of what happened to Campbell and others. He** if continually hits the puff, shows no interest in class work, and generally all-around has his head up his a**, he deserves to be suspended for the year.

What else do you want Moe, clean the stadium by himself?

This is hardly surprising. The kid never showed up to class. I don’t know if it was becuase he is lazy, was busy violating team rules, or didn’t want to be embarassed because he was barely literate.

Am I the only one that does’t know what the hell he did? Anybody know specifically and for sure what he has done?

Typical lazy-ass Wanny recruit. I see he’s brought the country club-type players from Miami to Pittsburgh.

Reminds me of Jawan Walker. Tons of talent, but didn’t want to work. He eventually left the team.

Joshua so he is a sterotypical Wanny Recruit? Are all of his recurits the same way? What percentage of Wanny’s a recruits fall into your stated category?

[…] Actually I have to disagree with his opening assumption. That there is enough depth that freshmen starting won’t be a common occurrence. First, I thought part of Coach Wannstedt’s pitch was that the best player will start. Next, there is only solid depth at just a few positions — WR, RB and CB. And at RB, everyone expects McCoy to at least jump to the number 2 back. Both lines may be mostly set as far as who the starters are, but there is little depth after that. Injuries have to be expected, and that will be when the freshmen will really be needed. Even with two recruiting classes, I don’t really feel great about the lines. The drop-off seems steep, and I’m not sold on how good the starting units are. The linebacking corp is a complete toss-up. I have no idea what the actual depth chart will look like. I am sure, though, that it won’t be very different by week 7. (Tommie Campbell, by the way, appears to be transferring to Edinboro.) Safety, Elijah Fields out for the season really hurts. Mike Phillips, who could have lost the starting job to Fields, even knows that. “We need every guy we’ve got. When you lose anyone, it’s a big blow,” said Phillips, a fifth-year senior who started five games last season. “He can really do some things. Just his athleticism and speed, he can really have advantages over other players that we can use. It’s going to be a big loss.” […]
