GrayWatch: Brief Media Review

What happens now, is that Aaron Gray will be hopping an early flight from Philly to Chicago. The day after the draft are the post-draft press conferences in the franchises respective cities with the draftees being present.

The Chicago media naturally was much more focused on the Bulls pick of Joakim Noah at #9. As for the second round picks, well JamesOn Curry has more of a story since he had issues back in high school. Gray is just there.

“Aaron Gray is another big body,” general manager John Paxson said. “Obviously not the athlete that other players are, but he can be very solid for us.”

Gray was steady, but rarely dominating, as an upperclassman for the Panthers. He averaged 13.9 points and 9.5 rebounds last season, but concerns arose about his lack of speed and athleticism.

Those issues dropped him from a borderline first-round prospect early in the predraft process to a late second-round selection.

“He’s got a soft touch,” coach Scott Skiles said. “He moves around the floor pretty well. We look at him as a guy that, if he can make it, can body up some of the bigger players in the league for a few minutes.”

Gray, must have read some of the snippets after he was drafted about “making it,” judging by his comments.

”I still have a lot of work to do, but my foot is in the door,” Gray said. ”I just have to go out there and do my best.”

One of the major knocks on Gray was that he wasn’t athletic or quick enough, but he’s in better shape than he was in March when his college career ended, and he believes that he will be in even better condition after playing summer league with the Bulls.

Gray’s bags are already packed for his trip to Chicago.

”People right now, I’m sure are doubting me,” Gray said. ”It’s just the same thing at a different time of my life, people not thinking I’m going to make it. I just have to go out and prove them wrong.”

Well, at least he has something to help motivate him. The Bulls may look to find some more low-post help in free agency, but being so thin there and a couple restricted free agents (like Nocioni) will make Gray a low cost option to provide depth at the Center spot.
The lateness of where Gray was picked and the hour meant there wasn’t much in the newspapers yet. A little bit about other Centers taken before Gray. If Gray makes it with the Bulls, he stands to get a three-year deal worth nearly $2 million. The summer league will be vital.

Not to say I told you so, but I told you so. I was really starting to think he wasn’t going to get drafted. When the coach is trying to be optimistic about a person that the orgz. just drafted and the most he can say is that ” he may be able to body up other big guys for a FEW minutes a game”, you don’t really have a shot before it even starts. If I was A. Gray, I would really start losing weight by the day, because the only way to play for Scott Skiles is to be a high-motor guy and an aggressive player. He is neither right now.

Thanks for the update Ben…we have all been patiently awaiting it.

Remind me again what exactly it was that you told us? Something to the effect of he won’t last in the league, and he will get abused by other centers I believe. When was your point of view validated? He hasn’t played a single minute yet. You may want to hold off on patting yourself on the back just yet…Gray may in fact fail, but I don’t think you’ve earned the right to say “I told you so” quite yet.

Thanks again for checking back in…

Hey I’m rooting for the kid, but lets be honest-he was our best player and chances are he won’t last..I hope I’m wrong.

On another note, seems like Blair and Dodson will be eligible with a chance at getting Vargas still-“the rebuilding panthers” look pretty good right now!

Scoocher speaks the truth..

Where you hear that Blair and Dodson qualified – thought I just read something pointing towards the other direction with respect to Dodson.

Thanks..

Dodson needs to pass one summer school class. That should be do-able. Blair according to PSR has qualified after months of night school classes–he is a motivated guy! I like that a lot–it brings back memories of Billy Knight–poor HS Ed at braddock HS and a non-qualifier as a freshman–so, attended Pitt his frosh year in a program for disadvantaged students, qualified and eventually graduated with over a 3.0 (3.25?) GPA!!

There are 60 or so players drafted into the NBA, out of all the players available from college and around the world, Gray is one of them and Ben finds a way to make that a negative thing…Get over it Ben, Gray will have millions to show for his 3 minutes of work per game…and you…will just be your angry self!

Comment by HbgFrank 06.29.07 @ 11:38 pm

Yeah, what an idiot. I will take a huge 7-footer on my team everytime. You can’t teach size.

Pitt fans (poisoned by relentless anti-Pitt media) are amazing. Here is a guy who did everything right. He came in a long-shot to be an elite player, then worked hard to progressively improve. He actually fulfilled his entire eligibility. He was a great student and never did anything to embarrass the university. Natural limitations, a late season injury, and the effects of playing in a conservative system combined to see him drop somewhat in the draft (but still one of the elite 50 players in the country). And ‘fans’ rip and belittle him and this accomplishment.

I recall a game with UConn in Gray’s freshman season when he scored on Okafor. The announcers were astonished that he wasn’t rejected into the 5th row, and frankly, so was I. This guy came a long, long way. Celebrate it, don’t denigrate it.

If both Blair and Dodson are eligible this fall, and Vargas commits, that puts us one over the limit, right?

Comment by Jeff 06.30.07 @ 11:27 am

I agree geeman. I don’t get the negative comments. Aaron is what he is, but he has made tremendous progress since HS. He is now one of the top members worldwide in his chosen profession. Ben, can you say the same for yourself? I didn’t think so …

Comment by John 06.30.07 @ 12:25 pm

I’m not going to take any sides here. I think Gray will be fine with the minutes he gets because he is going to bust his ass. That’s what playing at a blue collar school will do for someone. At the same time I don’t think he will ever be anything but garbage time man unless people get hurt and he betters himself. European centers and power forwards move quick and have a larger arsenal of shots because the speed of the European game requires that of them. That’s what makes them attractive and why they chose them over Gray. I love what gray has done for us and he is a great person and will be for the rest of his life but unless he kills himself the next couple of seasons then he will go the way of Taft. This may sound extreme but it’s the truth and if you oppose it that’s fine but that means you don’t watch NBA games.

I hope he does succeed and that he becomes a huge player at the next level, I honestly do because he deserves it. Either way if he makes the team then he will be laughing all the way to the bank. I see 5-7 minutes per game(if lucky) and averaging 1.8 points and 3.5 rebounds if he plays his rookie year, second year could be make it or break it depending on the draft talent pool. He should play at the all-star game where first years play second years…he should shine at that game. If he gains some muscle and hustle then he can be a legit 6th man. I wish him everything in the world because he was a good student athlete and a better human being.

Just because somebody doesn’t think Gray will be a good NBA player, doesn’t mean its a negative post.

Everyone can talk about what Aaron Gray isn’t, but tell me how many of you thought he would end up pre-season big east POY and a two time 1st team selection by the time he graduated? The guy has proven us wrong pretty much every time we had some reason to doubt him. He’s a hard worker, he can maximize his potential, and at the very least, I hope he can make the money that he deserves and maybe stick around for a few championships. Who knows, he may even start for a season or two.

Comment by Yi 07.01.07 @ 11:51 am

Frankly, I DON’T watch the NBA. It’s a borefest and a joke compared to college basketball. I’ve tried to watch and like it, but the game approaches the legitimacy of pro wrestling, in that all plays and every call is tailored to benefit the star player. Nobody plays hard or hustles and most of them shoot worse than I do.

I feel happy for Gray that a decent guy will hopefully make a good living doing it for a while and if possible, put away enough cash to last him most of his life. If he can be a moderate success on a good team, hopefully it will lift Pitt’s stature a bit (and shut up some of the lcoal douchebag media that dismiss Pitt’s hoops success because we produce no great pro players). But that’s frankly the most amount of interest I can summon for it.

Fair enough, jk. But take a look at the archives and you’ll find a handful of comments penned by “ben” that are wholly inappropriate and inflammatory.

For me (and many above), it’s less a matter of his opinion as it is continuous demonstrations of poor character. Again, see the archives. You’ll likely get an understanding for the vibe thereafter.
