Backup Guard Keith Benjamin and his girlfriend were arrested and charged with simple assault after a domestic dispute. They were apparently arguing over car keys. The girlfriend had some scratches on her face neck and her knee was bloody. Both refused medical treatment. Both claimed to have been hit by the other.

They were arraigned and released. The preliminary hearing is on Thursday. Call it a hunch, but I suspect neither will be pressing charges.

It’s stupid and wrong on so many levels, but I don’t think it’s a huge deal. Benjamin has never been in trouble before this. It’s not good.

I’ll defer to those who know the Allegheny County Criminal Court and Police system far better than I (go ahead, Pat), so correct me if I’m wrong. It is probably standard procedure to take both into police custody and file charges in cases of domestic disputes. Then let things be sorted out.

UPDATE: This story makes it a bigger deal. That detail of “Officers observed swelling and a bruise on Olczak’s right cheek,” makes this much more serious. The earlier story made no mention of this injury.

Not a good situation. I wonder how Dixon will respond. He really seems to like Benjamin, but you can’t get away with beating up a woman.

Could this result in a scholarship being available should a certain KSU recruit decide to back out on his KSU commitment?

Actually, standard procedure in Pittsburgh is to arrest the male and take the female’s version of the story as gospel. Particularly when there are visible injuries on the female.

It is VERY unusual for both combatants in a domestic dispute to be taken into custody. Even if charges are not going to be filed (if no visible injuries in a “he hit me – no I didn’t” type dispute), the male is almost always asked to leave for the night and stay somewhere else. There must have been an admission on the part of the female that she assualted Benjamin, or perhaps even assaultive behavior on her part in the presence of the officers.

I don’t know what the real story is. But having now read the news reports, if they are proven true (if Benjamin truly “punched” a woman in the face), then there is no place for him on the Pitt BB team, or on the campus. Men who beat women are one notch above child molestors in my book. I have a daughter, and God help the man who ever thinks it’s OK to punch her in the face for any reason! I really hope that this story is not true.

I have 4 daughters and i agree with hbgfrank, if the charges are true, and lets face it Benjamin isn’t any all american canidate, why sweep this under the rug and bring our reputation down to the level of the penn states of the world. domistic violence is never excusable!
