Shame Sean Miller and Xavier couldn’t get the upset — not to mention OSU’s Greg Oden avoiding being called for a flagrant for shoving the Cage into the second row on that foul. It absolutely deflated the Musketeers in the OT.

Butler-Maryland was a lot of fun (and a Butler 62-59 win was nice) — seriously, does the ACC offer a special camp that teaches flopping — but thankfully it’s over and now just a little time before the VCU-Pitt tip.

5:55: I may be a little late on the liveblogging. I need to stick with the L-ville-TAMU game.

5:58: Not that it matters. The Pitt game is being shown locally in my area (meaning it’s blacked out for the PPV package) and they are sticking with L-ville.

6:54: Okay. Nice 41-26 at the half. Still, VCU has been a second half team. Especially Maynor. Graves has been tremendous in stopping him. Has him frustrated and pissed. That’s good.

The weakness of VCU is their defense and Pitt has taken advantage of it. Beautiful to see everyone scoring — no one in double digits.

If VCU goes on a run to start, I will be going silent. Hey it worked in the first half.

8:28: Survive and advance.

I’ll say this, VCU did it 3 straight games. I would call that a trend. Coming back from deeper and deeper deficits. George Mason, Duke and then Pitt.
As much as Pitt nearly lost it, VCU mounted a tremendous comeback and did everything right. Not just the tremendous defensive pressure and effort — but hitting those shots. There were a bunch of deep, hands in the face 3s and circus shots. That was impressive.

Now, Pitt seemed so close to wilting and breaking. After Fields missed 2 FTs at the end of regulation, they regrouped. They lost Kendall to fouling out and they still did it.  The team got the win in the OT. When momentum, the crowd and everything had turned against them.

What is important is that Pitt is in the Sweet 16.

I think UCLA would be a better game, that way we keep playing good competition and don’t go stupid if we meet a lower seed(psychological). Even though UCLA has great guards I think we match up good against them and I want to say we beat Howland, even though he was good for us. If Indiana wins, I won’t complain though 😛 . This can be our year to shut up people like Vitale and other people that get a hard on when the ACC/Big Ten Challenge is on.

By the way – with 2 minutes left in the 1st half UCLA is up 15-11. That, my friends, sounds ugly.

Of course, in the Burgh CBS decided to show us North Carolina/Mich. St.

KDKA must be run by Nits. I can’t believe the local Pgh affiliate allows CBS to cut away from our game infinite times, and then doesn’t give us the UCLA game.

Comment by geeman2001 03.17.07 @ 9:47 pm

Well, I had to listen to most of the first half on a “party bus” for this St. Patrick’s day thing a friend of a friend organized. We left to go back like a half an hour late and then turned around at one point to pick up some jag off who missed the bus. I was about to lose it!

During that VCU come back, the refs sucked. All of a sudden VCU could do whatever it wanted on D and no fouls and they called BS foul after BS foul on Pitt. And we helped them out by dribbling way too much. VCU also shot the freaking lights out during that period. That was sick.

But, man, I don’t get the “sour 16” thing at all. Pitt did some stuupid things to let VCU back in, but VCU shot the lights out and the refs and NCAA clearly wanted it to be a close game, b/c there is no other way to explain those calls. Overall, they played a darn good game and did what they needed in OT. The defense was strong, the offensive execution was there for most, but not all, of the game, and, finally, in OT, they hit the FTs they needed.

We can beat UCLA. It will take a great performance, but we can do it. Go Pitt! Great to see you back in the Sweet 16!!!

Comment by Carmen 03.17.07 @ 10:00 pm

Yeah, I think we could beat them, too…I’d just rather not have to. If things stay to form (which is far from a given, we’d have to beat UCLA and Kansas just to get to the Final Four. If Pitt manages to do that, then teams like Florida, UNC, or Ohio State await.

Obviously, that’s looking WAY ahead in the future, but that could force us to beat four #1 quality seeded teams in a row.

I’d like as many easy games as we can get.

I would be happy to win the next 4 just like the last one! UCLA/Indy are really shooting the lights out. It looks like a score from a football game.

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 03.17.07 @ 10:32 pm

Thanks a lot, Indiana. Way to crap the game away after coming all the way back.

Into the mines of Moria, we go…

Comment by PittHoops 03.17.07 @ 10:58 pm

Jamie, you better get your guys to come out and punch them in the mouth from the start. If we get off to a crap start as we did in games in the Big East tourney, we’re going to be in trouble.

Comment by PittHoops 03.17.07 @ 10:59 pm

UCLA it is….barely…

I hope we shoot better than IU did.

Comment by Stuart 03.17.07 @ 11:00 pm

IU’s game reminded me of the Big East finals…except we’re all still waiting for Pitt to make a run.

Comment by Stuart 03.17.07 @ 11:02 pm

UCLA can have an off night and beat Pitt. Not so the other way around.

Still, Gray can eat Mata alive.

Comment by Kevin 03.17.07 @ 11:04 pm

It looks like if we shoot above 35%, even missing most are FT’s, we have a chance. UCLA shooting 36%? 20% from 3? First one to 60 wins.

Comment by Stuart 03.17.07 @ 11:05 pm

Just like Indy’s big man (White) Gray will be doubled. It is gonna come down to what Indy couldn’t do…shoot from outside…If we can shoot from outside and get the numbers that Indy got from there big guy we will win. I know its pretzel logic but I watched the first half they shut White down and no one else stepped up.

We need our outside shooters to show up. On a side note digger says UCLA has the advantage because Pitt will turn the ball over with the press.

Thoughts on the match up?

Comment by DaveD 03.17.07 @ 11:11 pm

A lot of negativity on this site for a team that just made it to the Sweet 16. nothing sour about it in my book. Don’t people on this site watch any other college games. Teams blow leads all the time. Look at UCLA a few minutes ago. We don’t like it, but it happens. Even to very good teams. he bottom line is we are moving on and I’m thrilled. As I said at the beginning of the Dance it takes a combination of 1. good match ups 2. getting hot 3. a little luck. So far we are getting our share of all three.

Forget about how we won tonight. “a winnn is a winnn is a winnn” Johnny Majors

Comment by TMGPanther 03.17.07 @ 11:12 pm

should be a great game next week. two great defensive teams (that cant shoot foul shots). i think we match up fairly well with ucla. gray can have his way with mata, and if we can hit shots from the outside we can win. im looking forward to it. by the way, i dont know if my system can take more games like tonight. i was shaking, and honestly sick to my stomach. and im sure im not the only one. it took everything i had not to fire off an f-bomb laced tirade at the end of the game in the middle of a beef o’bradys.
SWEET 16! HAIL TO PITT!!!

SURVIVE AND MOVE ON

Comment by Dan 72 03.17.07 @ 11:28 pm

Over the years I have learned to invoke the rule: nothing good can happen watching a team with a big lead–it applies to football and basketball. Went off to dinner with Pitt up by 15–missed all of the heart stopping/nauseating moments of 2nd half and OT. Played almost a flawless first half–VCU started making shots and adding pressure in 2nd half and OT.
Great win in front of a hostile crowd–we can beat UCLA if take better control of the ball–encouraging sign, is we are shooting 50% from 3 pt range in the last two games. If we continue to do that well–like our chances against anyone we play.

Please help! I accidently erased the Pitt-VCU game on my DVR. Can someone please post or send the video? Arrrgh.

Comment by Davy D 03.18.07 @ 12:09 am

The Penguins blow a big lead to an inferior opponent and win in a shoot out about twice a week and everyone goes ga-ga.

Pitt does it and the world is ending.

I’m sure at this point the unsteady, shaky Panthers have no hope against the Bruins. Perfect position to be in. No pressure, so just come out an have fun and play.

Comment by panther84 03.18.07 @ 7:43 am

Whats up with the Pitt Fans, per CBSsportsline Pitts fans did not show up at all to Buff.despite being only 200miles away.If Pitt administration who sells the tickets treat us like they did for the big east tickets I can see why no one went.Longtime ticket holder with great seats was treated to 4 ticket for the bigeast in no were land.I gave them back and went to bigeast and scalped for better seats.Pitt probably gave out shit tickets and nobody WANTED THEM> its to bad that the crowd was for VCU and turned against us.LETS GO PITT

Comment by Buzz 03.18.07 @ 10:44 am

I am on the record as saying that success this season for Pitt would be for them reaching the 16. They have done so and I am truly happy for them.

They are in the bonus round now. We will just have to see what happens.

I am glad I live in the South though, because except for the end of the game and overtime, I had to watch the ticker on the screen. But in retrospect that was good for me. I did not have to go through the anguish of seeing the 19 point lead evaporating. That must have been he** for you guys!!!
