This is it. VCU upsets Duke 79-77 and sends them home after the first round for the first time since 1996.

As the last game of the night, of course the prior game would run long. Jeez Maynor is a killer. I don’t know how many of you saw what he did to George Mason in the CAA Championship. He scares the hell out of me, assuming Pitt wins.

Tip time is 10:10.

10:14: Looks like this game will be called loosely. That benefits Pitt. So does the score. 13-0 Pitt. 17:05 still to go in the half.

10:32: Well, looks like Wright St. has some fight in them. 21-15 with under 11 minutes. Gray took an extended break. Solid WSU game plan to take their time on offense and then drive when presented the opportunity.

10:39: Call a TO. Pitt just stopped playing team offense. Everyone just started launching, sloppy. Tied at 22.

10:50: Fields has really struggled lately. He seems to be trying to hit the homerun in his passes and shooting too much lately. I don’t know what it is. He just is making reckless passes, way too often.

10:53: Speeding the game up actually helped get Pitt back the lead. Not running and gunning, but getting out ahead of the defense. The bright side, assuming Pitt wins, they won’t be taking VCU lightly.

11:00: 43-30 Pitt at the half. Everybody breathing. Just a little bit of highs and lows in the first half.

11:16: Anyone else notice that Eastern Kentucky has closed to within 5 early in the second half. After leading by 27. Fire Roy Williams.

11:52: Looks like Buffalo has cleared out as the game has remained a blowout throughout the second half. Graves did a fantastic job on making DaShaun Woods a non-factor for most of the game. Ramon had a good game. The cynical view is that, of course he did, he was shooting over guards that weren’t as tall as him and played too far off. Still he hit the open looks — just hope he still does that on Saturday.

12:06: Well, after watching Ramon get stripped twice in 10 seconds, I think he won’t be getting too cocky despite his solid shooting night.

12:07: Jeff Rizk hits 1-2 at the FT line.

Final score. 79-58 Pitt wins.

Now it’s VCU. Start reviewing what worked against Marquette and Louisville in the BET and really emphasize protecting the ball and getting it inside.

Anyone konw how to get around the blackout on the internet MMOD?

Comment by Desmondo 03.15.07 @ 11:26 pm

The only good thing about this blackout is that I don’t have to see Levon Kendall suck.

Comment by Bushman 03.15.07 @ 11:27 pm

Hansbrough is a douche bag.

Comment by Desmondo 03.15.07 @ 11:27 pm

How many layups will we miss in this game?

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 03.15.07 @ 11:28 pm

The CBS MMOD keeps freezing, so I have switched over to Hillgrove and Groat.

I figure CBS will switch over to the Pitt game with about 4 minutes remaining.

Sign up for ncaasports.com and NCAA March Madness on Demand. Free and pretty damn good.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 03.15.07 @ 11:28 pm

Kendall just finished a nice 3 point play. I think he’s playing well tonight.

Comment by Kevin Yoder 03.15.07 @ 11:28 pm

Antonio Graves and Greg Lee must be related because they both drop passes more than any two humans I have ever seen.

Pitt is romping. Bring on VCU. They will present a challenge b/c they are a great pressing team (we struggle against the press) and they shoot 3s well.

Comment by Roman 03.15.07 @ 11:29 pm

I agree. As far as Kendall goes this is a pretty good night. Sam is money though.

Comment by Bushman 03.15.07 @ 11:30 pm

Hey Sean, not sure what browser your using but I had the same problem in firefox and switched to IE and no more freezing…except by Gray…LOL

Comment by Jason in Columbus 03.15.07 @ 11:30 pm

That’s what i like to hear roman…bring on VCU. They’re a bunch of thugs. Sweet sixteen baby!!!

Comment by Bushman 03.15.07 @ 11:31 pm

Watch Wright State’s players getting away with murder inside..holding Pitt’s player’s hands down when the refs aren’t looking so they can get rebounds…refs have yet to call it.

Pitt also better concentrate on catching passes with two hands. How many times have we fumbled them tonight. We won’t get away with that at VCU

Comment by Dan 72 03.15.07 @ 11:32 pm

I like that we’re kicking ass.

I don’t like some of the nonchalant bullshit like that play by Gray, who had an easy lay-up, but tried to make a fancy pass instead.

This won’t cut it against anyone with a pulse.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 03.15.07 @ 11:34 pm

Listen. I’m happy we’re winning and all. But all these stupid decisions we’re making when up 22… Yeah, Georgetown didn’t make those last Saturday night. We need a killer instinct. Gray leading the fast break is not it…

Comment by Dave in Orlando 03.15.07 @ 11:35 pm

I’m going to shut up now and just enjoy this game.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 03.15.07 @ 11:36 pm

I think it’s my computer more than MMOD. The audio is fine but the video stops, then picks up about 10 seconds later.

Xavier-BYU is going down to the wire. Go Fighting Sean Millers!

Comment by Sean 03.15.07 @ 11:36 pm

Is there such a statistic as fast break conversion percentage. I would have to think ours is among the lowest in Div. 1A. Our players never attack the hoop on the break. Gray was 6 inches from a layup and passed it for christ’s sake!! I know it’s a 19 point lead, but if we are goingn to get anywhere in this tourney, have to convert fast breaks!!

Comment by Carmen 03.15.07 @ 11:37 pm

I haven’t seen anyone mention it lately, but I have to say Graves has really been the most consistent players down the stretch, his defensive really helped Pitt go up on Wright State

Comment by Jason in Columbus 03.15.07 @ 11:39 pm

Sean, I was having that problem earlier today.

It eventually just went away.

For the record, I use IE.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 03.15.07 @ 11:42 pm

This is why I need to go out and watch these games. CBS is now on their 3rd game. I want my PITT!!!

Comment by Jeremy 03.15.07 @ 11:43 pm

Jason in Columbus – I agree…to me, he seemed like the only one that showed up in the same capacity and with the same fire each of the three nights in the BET. It was good to see. Especially after being so aggravating through the years.

Comment by Desmondo 03.15.07 @ 11:44 pm

Desmondo, yes a nice change, it was odd to begin liking his play.

Comment by Jason in Columbus 03.15.07 @ 11:46 pm

I’ve heard complaints about MMOD this year from tons of people and I’ve had the same problems myself.

Ramon 4 of 5 on the three pointers tonight.

Comment by Dennis 03.15.07 @ 11:47 pm

anyone else think Gray is hurt?

Comment by Dan 72 03.15.07 @ 11:47 pm

Watching MMOD using Firefox on Linux with a cable broadband connection. Working flawlessly here.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 03.15.07 @ 11:52 pm

Don’t know if Gray is hurt, but he may be sick. He looks particularly pasty and his eyes particularly sunken.

Speaking of more consistent play, Cook has also been a bigger factor. He still disappears for long stretches, though. But Graves clearly has the most fire of anybody on this team. Hopefully it is rubbing off on the others.

Comment by Carmen 03.15.07 @ 11:53 pm

My guess is on his week or two recovering from his ankle injury he lost all his conditioning for the year. And I wouldn’t doubt that by the GTown game his ankle ached.

Comment by Kevin 03.15.07 @ 11:53 pm

Is the Philly area the only place that is getting the CBS “whiparound” screwing right now? I have not seen a second of the 2nd half.

Comment by Jeremy 03.15.07 @ 11:56 pm

Jeremy – I’m in the philly area too…it almost seems that Philly has something against UPitt…they don’t even get appropriate coverage in the Inquirer…total BS!

Comment by Desmondo 03.15.07 @ 11:59 pm

Finally, Pitt is back on tv.

Comment by Desmondo 03.16.07 @ 12:01 am

You know well that Philly is Penn State country for football and the Big Five for hoops. Pittsburgh is some far off wasteland at the other end of the state. My beef is when they announce a game and then don’t actually stick to their own schedule.

Comment by Jeremy 03.16.07 @ 12:02 am

Hey get those reserves in there!!

Comment by Tim Z. 03.16.07 @ 12:04 am

BTW … the Pitt cheerleaders during my years at Pitt (1989 to 1993) were far hotter than they are today. Who could ever forget the “Dance Team” taking to the court at Fitzgerald for the first time in all white spandex body suits!!!

Comment by Jeremy 03.16.07 @ 12:05 am

After that bad spell of careless play Pitt played better. I doubt they can get away with this crap against VCU though. They need one of their 6 turnover games. Better figure out how to break the press. Fun game.

Comment by Kevin Yoder 03.16.07 @ 12:07 am

Rizk gets a free throw…great to see that.

Good win tonight….onwards to VCU

Comment by Tim Z. 03.16.07 @ 12:07 am

Good win…If we focus, we can see another sweet 16. Young and Ramon get ice cream tonight.

Comment by Panthoor 03.16.07 @ 12:08 am

16 turnovers. Need to protect the ball against VCU

Comment by TMGPanther 03.16.07 @ 12:18 am

Nice, Rizk with a point and Doyle Hudson with a nasty block. That’s a pretty nice cap on a solid night. Still anxious about VCU but it’ll at least be nice to be able to watch tomorrow without a cloud over my head.

Comment by Will 03.16.07 @ 12:24 am

VCU big time worry for me. We need to play our game not thiers. We have to set the tempo not them.

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 03.16.07 @ 12:33 am

What time is the game on Saturday?

Comment by Desmondo 03.16.07 @ 12:46 am

VCU is a good team. Pitt is better. No excuses, take care of business.

Comment by Omar 03.16.07 @ 1:27 am

Game time Saturday: 5:50pm. Butler-Maryland opens up at 3:30 and we’re next.

Comment by baudolino 03.16.07 @ 1:32 am

5.30 pm is listed…about 30 minutes after the first game ends, so i’d say it will actually be 5.50 or 6 pm.

I’m very scared, I watch the first game, they are very fast and very athletic. They press on EVERY SINGLE POSESSION, swipe at the ball, trap….etc. And when their on offense, they are still very quick, penetrating, etc. They don’t have an inside game, but Gray will be a liability on defense, standing like a stick in the mud. And they seem like they never get tired. Had all 5 starters and someone else off the bench score well.

We did learn our lesson from Bradley last year, right? They can’t possibly overlook this game, can they? Anybody want to catch them in the lobby of their hotel and tell them to “REMEMBER BRADLEY”?

Comment by Stuart 03.16.07 @ 1:36 am

their = they’re Fuck you, Grammar.

Comment by Stuart 03.16.07 @ 1:37 am

Jeremy, I noticed the last time I was at the Pete that there are two sets of chicks.

There’s the dancers, which are kind of like the band’s majorettes in high school. They’re subpar.

Then there’s the actual cheerleaders. I was walking down to Forbes to get some food after the game and about four of them happened to be going that way at the same time as me. They were all smoking hot. Nice girls too, dumb as bricks, but nice girls.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 03.16.07 @ 1:49 am

By the way, no I did not hit on any of them, my girlfriend was with me!

(….grrrr… stupid girlfriend)

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 03.16.07 @ 1:50 am

Since we’re talking about cheerleaders here – is little Howland still on the dance team for basketball games? That would make a Pitt/UCLA game interesting too.

Comment by Kevin 03.16.07 @ 6:57 am

I am a cheerleader. yea, they are smoking hot, for the most part. Why do you think i’m on the team? Also, Little howland is a cheerleader not a dancer and she is not there this year. she’ll be rooting for her dad for sure. and i wonder which girls you saw, because I wonder which ones are ‘dumb as bricks’

Comment by Verle 03.16.07 @ 9:52 am

Way to go Verle.

Comment by TMGPanther 03.16.07 @ 1:50 pm

Definately they will have to play their game and protect the ball. Also they need to leave Gray in the middle on D. No need for him to be stepping out against VCU, they are too quick.

Put Graves on their PG, be patient with their press & keep the ball in the middle while making smart clean passes, and work the ball down low. And for goodness sakes, Gray please keep the ball above your head, and drive to the hole and make them foul you!!!
