Script Suspicions

I nearly forgot, in the Zeise Q&A the issue of the script helmets Palko and Blades wore was addressed — sort of.

Q: What is your take on the script Pitt helmets worn by Palko and Blades at the Senior Bowl? Is this a sign of things to come?

ZEISE: I had no less than 25 inquiries about this very subject which means some of you need to get a grip on this script thing. The helmets worn by Blades and Palko were worn because the two kids decided they wanted to wear them. It was not an athletic department decision, it has no significance for the future of the uniforms. It was not appreciated by certain members of the athletic department, who felt the kids should have been made to wear Pitt’s current logo on a national stage. So in short, according to people within the athletic department, there is no chance that Pitt will go back to the script next year or in the near future. The current logo — the one that was on the helmets last year — will remain in place. So please put an end to this script silliness. It isn’t going to happen.

Only 25? Not sure I’m buying the explanation. Especially since there is still no addressing where they came from. As has been noted by others, the script and the lettering was not some decal over the regular helmet. Are they saying — however obliquely that the players had or had access to alternate helmets? There’s just something that isn’t adding up correctly.

It’s simple..the existing helmet is a sticker..you peel that off and stick on whatever you like…they chose the script..this can be done with scanning an exisiting image and printing it on a sticker based output.

I like how the admin. is pissed at palko and blades.

Any sense if the Big East will add another football program…

It seems to me ND if off the table…so….do we keep all of the current schools or drop a basketball only school, ie-Marquete, Villanova, Providence..etc..and replace with say a Memphis, Navy, or even make a play on say Maryland….

Another suggestion would be to see if Villanova or another Big East only school would be willing to create a D1 football program…as did Connecticut…any suggestions? ideas? Or will the Big East stay a 8 team league for the next 5-10years?

nova’s stadium is too small and have little space to do anything about it..a major requirement

Comment by scoocher 02.02.07 @ 1:49 pm

the same could have been said about Cincinnati or Pitt, but we found solutions…I would like to see the Big East steal Maryland and add Memphis and drop Providence and Marquete….possibly add Navy and make a firm offer to PennSucks….but hey we all can dream…

The pictures I saw of the aforementioned Senior Bowl helmet featured script Pitt with a blue/white/blue stripe down the middle. The Panthers’ gameday helmets are solid gold w/ no stripes. What gives?

the helmets all have stickers folks…its not that difficult to change, you peel off the old Pitt logo and place a new sticker in its place.. ie a script logo…ps.. you can buy these helmet stickers both online or at the Pitt store……

Marco & Scoocher, i’d buy it EXCEPT for the stripe down the middle. Our helmets don’t have stripes. The Senior Bowl Helmets did, and they were’nt sticker-stripes. It was much more than a simple decal switch.

I’ve said before that Navy would be a great addition to BE football. They play good ball, have a built in following and alumni all over the globe, and have traditions galore (more Heisman trophy winners than most schools). And, to watch the march of cadets into the stadium before a game sends chills down your spine – John Feinstein (good sports writer) has said that the tradition cadet march is one of the finest sports traditions we have. The cadets and alumni travel to a lot of away games also – certainly to PITT, Rutgers and WVU at least.

Having them join the Big East would be a win-win situation because Navy could still schedule their three major games outside of their BE commitments (Notre Dame, Air Force and Army).

Army
Navy
Memphis
Penn State
ND
..I love the Maryland Idea, Marco

I would love to have any mix of those teams join the BE. In fact, I think expansion would go a long wat to general acceptance of the latest additions to the Big East because I for one have not yet warmed up to the Big East noobz. (in football anyway)

Penn State will join the Big East when pigs fly. ND would be great, but that’s not going to happen either, and as a part time ND fan I’d rather they maintain their schedule as is (They’ll be playing Pitt again in the near future too). I think the BE just has to wait for the current newbies to improve.

The stripes on the helmet could have just been colored tape.

Zeise can be kind of a dick sometimes. What’s with the bitchy attitude? If you want to do a Q&A column, you’re going to have to deal with the, um, ideosyncrasies of Pitt fans.

I couldn’t care less about the logo but I agree that the reply was needlessly harsh (frankly these largely-irrelevant beat reporters for a trashy paper in a minor league city should be happy anyone takes the time to email them at all). And Pitt is just as retarded in ignoring the majority of fans who want this thing back. They’d sell a ton more merchandise and make more money for the athletic program. They own the thing, so it’s not like they’d have to pay someone else royalties to use it. Those diehards who don’t care like me will continue to not care and still buy tix and shirts and stuff, but more importantly they might lure back some fans who have drifted away. Every way you look at it it’s a slam dunk.

“…and as a part time ND fan I’d rather they maintain their schedule.”

That’d be fine to post at Blue-Gray Sky, but it’s a pretty smug opinion to hold in these parts. So shut up, bill

25 inquiries huh? Must be that damned “vocal minority.”

Notre Dame is content being a “part-time” Big East member (Basketball). Hypocrisy I know…but what else is new with the team everyone loves to hate?

There isn’t a 13 million dollar pay out for basketball tournament appearances, but there is for BCS football games. (Of which Notre Dame went to two in the last 2 years and got BLOWN OUT against superior competition.)

Comment by Ryan M 02.03.07 @ 1:59 am

I think we’ll start seeing the BCS committee and pollsters wake up to what ND really is. A good football program that is above average, but not among the country’s elite. You could see and hear it in the national media when they lost their 9th bowl game in a row this last season. But, the one thing they still have is a national following due to the religious aspect of the university – so that keeps it attractive to a major network.

Comment by Reed 02.03.07 @ 2:39 pm

Two points: If home attendance goes low enough to send Long into a tailspin, don’t be surprised to see the script helmets appear one home game, like the gold jerseys did for Louisville.
Also, Zeis is getting too opinionated. Maybe he and the Penn State beat writer could switch.

Comment by Tony 02.04.07 @ 7:22 am

Navy would be a great football addition as would Army. They should stay in the Patriot for basketball. Both programs are on the rise. ND will eventually have to conference up. The Big East is the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) for college Bball and I could see a ton of pressure (the kind you can’t refuse) on BC to come back to the league if ND joins in football. Go to 10 with Army and Navy (football only) now and 12 with ND and BC later. The bigger problem is who goes in BB when BC comes back. Actually, BC may benefit greatly with this deal from a travel standpoint. Talking with important BC Alums they are none too happy about a conference rival stealing their coach and a lack of a real rival, so they could be much more open to the idea. The BE would 7 or 8 real tough teams and 4 or 5 that would draw better than the DII games on the schedule.
