First off with the basketball related news and notes, one of which applauds the Panther’s assist-to-turnover ratio. Simply put, we have the best ratio in all of the nation.

Depending on how long the season lasts, Pitt could finish with near 700 assists. No other team in the program had even 600 in one season.

Through 18 games, Pitt has 353 assists and 203 turnovers.

They’re also on pace to become only the third Panthers team in 29 years to finish with fewer than 400 turnovers. Take care of the ball and you get more shots, leading to more points, and eventually to more wins.

There were a few times when Mike Cook didn’t want to dish it off; instead he just wanted to get to the hoop and score on Georgetown’s DaJuan Summers after Summers said something to Cook.

“He kept elbowing me and kept talking to me,” Cook said. “I just tried to stay cool and stay calm. But he went a little bit too far. He really got me into the game. From that point on, I just tried to go at whoever they put on me.

I’d take Mike Cook driving to the hoop anytime but an angry Mike Cook is the only thing better. Seeing anger and aggression from our players is something that I appreciate and enjoy. Now all we need is Aaron Gray to get fired up a little bit more. An angry Gray might be as good as any other big man in the country.

Finally, Kevin Gorman over at the Trib does a final wrap up of the College Gameday events. The whole thing put the school, the team, and the fans in a great light. Now, the Oakland Zoo is up there with the best student sections in America.

Over on the football side of things, a story from The Patriot News claims that LeSean McCoy won’t confirm reports (which have come from every major recruiting website) that he’s chosen Pitt.

“I haven’t given a definite verbal,” McCoy told The Patriot-News yesterday afternoon. “I’ll make my decision either Tuesday or Wednesday. … It’s between Pitt and Penn State.”

Scout.com, a recruiting Web site, reported yesterday that McCoy informed Pittsburgh football coach Dave Wannstedt he would play for the Panthers.

Rivals.com, another recruiting Web site, also lists McCoy as a Pittsburgh commitment.

National Letter of Intent Day, the first day a recruit can sign for his scholarship, is Feb. 7.

First off, this story comes from a newspaper that is obviously under the brainwashing old man known as Joe Paterno. Secondly, as pointed out in the comments section, this might all be a little ploy by McCoy to make his official press conference a little more interesting. Everyone likes a little more attention.

heres a little video i found of shady… cant wait to see this guy play for us…GO PITT

I live in Central PA and I’m all to familiar with the Patriot News. It’s not a bad paper by any means, but the sports coverage is overwhelmed with Penn State this and Penn State that, to the point where the articles are almost pointless. Their Pitt coverage is always lacking. For these reasons, the sports section is nothing more than a glance over for me. But the rest of the paper, very well done.

As a Pitt grad, I can tell you that the Patriot News is no more a PSU tool than the Post Gazette is for Pitt (meaning they do not just print what Paterno wants them to). They do cover PSU a lot, but it is often with the same cutting and biting commentary that the Post directs at Pitt. Many writers at the Patriot have called for Paterno to step down, and it is widely rumored that Paterno has no love for the Patriot (mostly because they give a D or F coaching grade to him and his staff after most PSU defeats). I’m sure that Shady is just trying to create drama around his press conference. As a MCD HS grad, I would love to see Shady join Aaron Berry on the Pitt roster. However, I feel the same about him as any other recruit: Until we have a signed LOI, we have nothing. It would be nice for Pitt to establish a pipeline to Mcd, because that team always has several D1 players on it. Hail to thee McDevitt High…Hail to Pitt!

Watched the video clips – this kid accelerates out of a direction changing move and that’s very rare. Most RBs try to get to top speed so quickly they have nothing left for the second level of the defense. McCoy seems to understand he’ll get past the line and holds a little in reserve for creating the breakaway run. That means good vision also.

I want him in a PITT uniform.

Hey HbG Frank. The Patriot runs a complete section on PSU games and a complete section on the after game. They also will give more time to a Big Ten team thaN pitt. PITT may get an article. CAN SOMEBODY INFORM THESE IDIOTS THAT THEY ARE THE STATE CAPITOL, not a PSU campus.

I lived in Harrisburg more than 10 years ago and have to say that the Patriot News did a good job of covering both college football programs – – – as long as you are talking about Penn State and Notre Dame. Have things changed?

Comment by Cris 01.15.07 @ 4:41 pm

The Patriot News coverage hasn’t changed but they are normally objective and wouldn’t print something like this unless it were true. (This is still Penn State Country big time) I believe that Mr. McCoy is still undecided regardless of what he told DW and the Pitt staff. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up at PSU.

Comment by Tony In Harrisburg 01.15.07 @ 4:55 pm

HAHA. PSU is still the biggest joke of a school… There demise was joining the big 10.. Now they are just a mediocre team that has a decent year every once in a while.. Mccoy is a city boy.. He will come to pitt where there is stuff happening rather than the shitfields of psu

Comment by Adam 01.15.07 @ 8:15 pm

It would be nice to get a consistent back that appears to have power and speed. We’ve been lacking this since Barlow.

Comment by Rex 01.15.07 @ 9:44 pm

adam – you dickbag, you must be a pitt grad….never really learned anything. Especially the english language, it isn’t “there demise” it is “their demise”……..

Don’t worry about McCoy, pick up a book and read!!! (and not the scratch and sniff ones either)…….. Wow, hopefully McCoy is smarter than you……..

paulhackett, please review your own work before criticizing the grammatical errors in other’s writings.

Also, it is interesting that you point out his poor writing skills but do not refute the subject of his post (you should have countered that in reality PSU is a good team that has mediocre years every once in a while).

Actually, you both sound kind of ridiculous.

Just out of curiosity, How many of Walt Harris’ players will still be on the 2007 roster? Does anyone know?

Comment by Rex 01.16.07 @ 8:19 am

Rex, I reviewed the roster and counted all the Juniors and Red Shirted Sophs and came up with 31. The roster was from 2006 so kids listed as seniors will be gone. Also, not sure about who of the Juniors were actually recruited by DW or Harris – but 31 would be a ball park figure – a few big names among them – but some starters like the McKillops, Clemond, Kinder, etc….

Comment by Reed 01.16.07 @ 12:48 pm

Thanks for checking on that Reed. For some reson I thought it would be much fewer, I guess I hadnt considered red shirts.

From a recruiting website:

Unfortunately, even though McCoy made a valiant effort, by obtaining a 3.7 GPA his fall semester at Milford, he didn’t receive a satisfactory SAT score in December.
I do not know what was actually said at that meeting, but it’s clear that Paterno set up some requirements that the McCoy family and Paterno could not agree upon.

That is why McCoy has decided to verbally commit to Pitt over the weekend and will announce at 3 p.m. this afternoon that he will sign with Pitt on Feb. 7.

So, he didn’t choose Pitt, he couldn’t make it at PSU. Something to be proud of in a recruit, guess we stole him….

This guy is nicknamed SHADY for a reason. Two words for ya…..Maurice Clarett!

Comment by paulhackett 01.16.07 @ 3:32 pm

Man, talk about third or fourth hand heresay information being passed off for the truth! And, the jump from a kid being academically shorthanded to a convicted criminal is slanderous – and irresponsible. How about us posters sticking to our opinions on stuff and let reporters try to get the story.

Comment by Reed 01.17.07 @ 12:32 pm

PaulHackett just thought you would like to know his mom nicknamed him that when he was a young child. LeSean is not a bad kid he’s just immature, Maurice Clarett is a criminal and is a bad person. Once you can tell me one crime of any signifcance LeSean has made, then shut up, your bitter because Shady didn’t pick UPS. And I’m going to be laughing at you when he becomes an amazing player for Pitt.

Comment by Nick 01.18.07 @ 1:19 am

“This guy is nicknamed SHADY for a reason.” What is that reason according to you?
