Some Toledo Stuff

Just got back, and stealing a few minutes at a coffee shop.

Dorin Dickerson is very happy about finally getting to play.

“I was really excited and I got a lot off my shoulders. I felt a lot of pressure to play and to play well.”

Apparently Coach Wannstedt was still a little hesitant before the game to burn Dickerson’s redshirt.

Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt said he talked with Dickerson and his father, Randy, before the game Saturday about forfeiting his chance at a redshirt.

“I think that Dorin had the mind-set that he wanted to play,” Wannstedt said. “He wasn’t concerned with how much, but he wanted to be part of it this year.

“When I recruited him, we told him he would have a chance to play. We’ll see how it goes from here. It’s a long season. We’ve got a lot of games left, and he got a nice start today.”

I’ve hardly been decisive in my opinion about Dickerson and redshirting. I tepidly (and with more than a little wiggle room) thought he should get to play this season, so I don’t think it was a mistake. I do, however, want to see how they use him. Hopefully a little more than just gimmick plays and special teams.
With the injury to Simonitis the redshirt also came off of Jason Pinkston. Honestly, this is the scarier prospect since Pinkston was converted in training camp to the O-line from the defense. Now he will be expected to be a key reserve for the O-line. That just speaks to the issue of injuries on the line and lack of depth.

This was a horrible game for Toledo and one of the worst outcomes in quite some time.

The Rockets, now 2-3, were held without a first-half touchdown for the first time since a 2003 game at Ball State, a span of 33 games, and finished a game without a TD for the first time since a 49-0 loss at Ohio State on Sept. 12, 1998.

That seems like some measure of revenge taken on Toledo.

It was great to beat Toledo like that. Talking to a guy in the stands he said when we played there he went and the fans are basically all a-holes there.

Lack of offensive line depth notwithstanding, the quick promtion of Pinkston speaks more to his rapid development and his devastating run-blocking abilities than anything else. That kid is a steamroller, and he is huge, nimble, reasonably fast, and has a nasty side to him. I’ve seen him play for three years now, and I’m convinced that he will play on sundays barring injury.

Count me in the “shouldn’t have burned his redshirt” camp with regard to Dickerson.

We’ve already got three guys who are having success catching the ball, so he’s not gonna play much at wideout, and this whole running-back-by-committee approach (which is warranted, to some extent) pretty much guarantees he won’t get more than five or maybe ten rushes a game at most.

So we’ve wasted a full year of his eligibility just so the guy can come in in the 5th game of the year and get maybe 1/3 of the carries at running back and return the occasional kick? I hope he makes those carries count. Yeesh.

I would have liked to see him stay at wideout. I think he could have had the same type of impact that Derrick Williams and Justin King are having at penn st.

I am not sure how big he is but seems a little small to play running back. I could see him eventually maybe moving to a DB/cornerback after Revis leaves.

I too would have liked to see him redshirt this year but DW did the right thing, he spoke to Dorin and his dad and explained that once he plays thats it. And if they were both comfortable with that then so be it. No need to upset him and his family especially when he can and wants to contribute ight now. He was out biggest recruit we cant just dismiss his desire to play if he has shown he is ready.

..and just what kind of impact are Derrick Williams and Justin King making at PSU?

Comment by Chris 10.02.06 @ 9:35 am

Orange Bowl victory last year for one. It is no secret that psu has always had a great d, but had no offensive playmakers. These 2 filled the role of playmakers and allowed them to be a real offensive threat.

I hate psu as much as the next pitt fan but you cant deny the effect these young playmakers have had on their team.

Here are my thoughts on redshirts. If a kid is really that good he won’t be staying four years anyway (with or without a redshirt year). I say let him play if there isn’t a much better alternative in front of him

I think it is great that Dickerson played. It’s also great that Stull is getting a lot of time. Same with Pinkston about to get meaningful playing timeThese actions are building blocks for next year. By the time next seasons rolls around, they will be eagar to show what they can do, rather than worried about being in the starting line-up for the first time.

Dickerson is listed as 6’2″ and 200 in the PITT website, but has been reported to be up to 220 lbs. That’s a great size for a RB.

Comment by Reed Kohberger 10.02.06 @ 1:04 pm

I think this issue is more that Wannestadt made a promise to Dickerson that he was going to play. So I would imagine he gave the kid the option to redshirt, but also gave him the opportunity to play limited minutes this year. At least Wannestadt was true to his word.

Right, right, Reed, Will. DD could prove the right size/ speed/ ability to compensate for a “good” back. But what I’m truly excited about is Xavier’s commit — I love the prospect of a 5’9″ , 215-220 mini-dozer. Don’t get me wrong, 5’9″ isn’t “mini” with frame he’s carrying — great center of gravity and running 4.6-4.8 40s. Let’s be honest, if XS was listed at 5’10” or 5’11” you’d flying higher with this pick-up. But this kid’s for real and only slightly seond tier to the Bo Williams and McCoys’ out there. It’s early yet. Nevertheless, though, and despite what I’d thought CCollins would do (at least at this point in the ’06 backfield — albeit and of course, it cannot be said he’s really getting the carries to prove himself as a true-runner at F/B), I am completely stoked by the impact this pivotal recriut might have in ’07.

He’s a matured frame, and there’s going to be some POP

CHAS, the f*cing NET NANNY is ABSOLUTELY JUST KILLING ME. (Sh*t, does someone have pics on ME now?) Just an ongoing and complete WTF? xInfinity with this claim I’ve submitted on multiple occasions.

Geez, Chas, your net-nanny’s clamped a chastity belt to my loins since the move to .com, and each week she’s seemingly plotting castration. Hell, it’s probably just me, right? right?

[…] All week, we’ve read how Pinkston will see a lot of time and be a key reserve. Now it seems that they are hedging. Talking about the line and how Palko hasn’t been sacked as much, Zeise responded in his Q&A. Q: It seems like Palko is getting sacked less, not because of great line play, but because of the West Coast system of quick passes and dumping off the ball. What are your thoughts? […]
